One week later
Charlotte was laying in the guest bed at Athena's house, where she had been staying for the past week. Her fingers gently traced the tender scar left by Ben's knife, a constant reminder of that horrific day. She felt awful about the nights she woke up screaming from the nightmares that haunted her. Her father would rush in to comfort her when he was home, and when he was on shift, it would be Athena or May who soothed her fears. Charlotte took a deep breath and tried to sit up, but her side was still sore from the surgery. With a shaky hand, Charlotte reached for the bottle of pain medication and took one to ease her discomfort.
A knock came from her door causing Charlotte to flinch slightly at the sudden noise. Charlotte let a sigh of relief out whenever Athena walked in. "Hey there. How are you feeling?"Athena asked.
"A bit better. It still hurts when I try to sit up a bit." Charlotte said as she pushed herself up fully sitting up straight.
"Well that would be expected. You think you have enough strength in ya to paint some pumpkins? Harry had been asking if you were coming down," Athena asked."If you help me walk down the stairs then I could..." Charlotte said not really wanting to leave her room but knew she had to at some point.
Athena carefully helped Charlotte stand up from the bed. Once Charlotte was standing up, Athena carefully wrapped an arm around Charlotte's waist. "Take it slow as you want hun," Athena whispered.
Charlotte nodded as she carefully began to walk down the steps. Athena matched her cautious pace making sure Charlotte didn't lose her balance. Thankfully, Charlotte reached the bottom steps and Athena gave her an encouraging smile in the small ounce of progress the girl had made that week. Charlotte weakly smiled back feeling a stabbing pain in her side but knew the pain meds would kick in soon.
"You guys still decorating those pumpkins? I have someone who wants to join y'all," Athena exclaimed.
Charlotte was thankful whenever Athena pulled out a chair for her to sit in, "Hiya," Charlotte said with a weak grin on her face as May smiled and handed her a paintbrush and paint.
"Hey honey," Bobby said.
"Why are there so many ghosts?" Athena questioned.
"Well, they're for Buck," Bobby replied. "I'm gonna put 'em all over the firehouse."
"Bobby says he thinks a ghost called 911," May told her mother.
"He's still on that? Buck and Eddie have been texting me non stop about that today," Charlotte exclaimed causing Bobby to laugh.
"That'd be so cool if it did," Harry exclaimed.
"Eddie thinks it's all made up in Buck's head," Charlotte said as she began to paint the pumpkin white.
"Well, Buck certainly thinks so."
"But ghosts aren't real," May said.
"Tommy Sheridan's family used to live in this apartment where this little old lady died, and he said the lights sued to flicker when they used the tea kettle," Harry said causing Athena and Charlotte to laugh.
"Oh, ow, note laughing still hurts," Charlotte exclaimed wincing at the pain.
"Writing that down," Harry said using an imaginary pen and paper to write down that point. Charlotte shook her head as Bobby chuckled.
"Didn't that building get red-tagged after the earthquake?" Athena asked.
"Yeah," Bobby answered.
"Yeah. Sounds more like faulty wiring than signals from the other side."
