After lunch we had our first Care of Magical Creatures class, with Hagrid. I was quite exited, and wondered what animal we would look at today. Ron and Hermione were still mad at each other. Hagrid told us to follow him and he led us to a paddock. He told us to open our books. The Monster books.
"How are we supposed to open them?" Malfoy said.
"Yeh've got to stroke the spine, look." He took Hermione's book and stroked the spine of it. The book shivered, opened and lay in Hagrid's hand, without it biting.
"Why didn't we guess that?" Malfoy sneered.
"I thought they were funny," Hagrid said in surprise.
"Yeah, very funny! Really smart to give us a book that can bite our hand off!"
"Shut up, Malfoy," Harry said, and I shot him a deathglare. Hagrid didn't invent those books.
Hagrid went away to get the Magical Creatures, and Malfoy made more comments about Hagrid.
"That oaf teaching this class, my father will have a fit when I tell him-"
"Then you should've chosen a different class, oaf," I said dangerously.
The class made an 'ooohh' sound. Malfoy walked up to me.
"Oh, go cry to your father. Oh wait, I'm forgetting, you don't have one."
I walked even closer to him.
"And I don't need one," I bit back. "At least I don't run to my father every time someone touches me." I pinched Malfoy hard in his arm. He withdrew his arm and took a step back.
"Are you going to tell your father about that, too?"
Malfoy made a face and turned to his friends. He turned back one more time.
"Oh, careful, Potter, there's a Dementor behind you," he said in a monotone voice, and his friends laughed.
"Oooohh," Lavender said.
I didn't know the girls from our dormitory where so annoying as well.

Hagrid came back with... Hippogriffs! I forgot about Malfoy and looked at the magnificent beasts. The back two legs, along with their bodies and tails, looked like that of a horse. The front legs, wings and heads were more eagle-like. They were still chained, and behind the fence.
"So, if you want to come nearer..." Hagrid said. I smiled and walked confidently as the first one to the fence. Harry, Ron and Hermione were not far behind me.
"Yeh always wait for the Hippogrif fto make the first move. It's polite. Yeh walk towards him, bow, and wait. If he bows back, yeh're allowed to touch him. If he doesn't bow, yeh get away from him, cause those talons hurt. Right, who wants to go first?"
I immediately raised my hand.
"Alright, come on, then," Hagrid said. I walked towards the fence, and Malfoy called: "Look out, she'll kill you!"
I turned my head in confusion.
"I was talking to the beast," he said.
I rolled my eyes, and climbed over the fence.
"Let's try Buckbeak," Hagrid said, and unchained one of the Hippogriffs and pulled him away from the others.
"Try not to blink, Hippogriffs don't trust yeh when yeh blink too much."
I made eyecontact with Buckbeak, and he stared at me with an orange eye.
Hagrid gave me instructions, and I did as he said. I bowed slowly, and waited. Buckbeak bowed back, by sinking through one knee.
"Good job, Jynx! Now, get closer, but slowly, and try to pet his beak."
I moved closer to the beast, and stretched out my hand to his enormous beak. Buckbeak held still, and closed his eyes, as if he was enjoying it. The class applauded, but I was guessing Malfoy and his friends were not.

"I think yeh can ride him now," Hagrid said. "Jus' climb up there, behind the wing."
I went to his left wing, and when I wanted to put my foot somewhere there, Harry ran to the fence.
"I thought you didn't like flying," he said.
"Not on a broomstick," I answered. "But this is way cooler!"
My heart pounded with excitement as I stepped up and sat down behind his feathers.
"Go on, then," Hagrid said, and slapped Buckbeak's behind. He stood up, and I held on to the feathers. He unfolded his wings, took a run and suddenly I was in the sky. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but it sure was amazing to soar through the air like this.
"Whoohoo!"
I had to say it. After a couple minutes Buckbeak made for the ground, and I had to hold on tight. I felt a thud, and we were back where we started.
"A'right, who's next?"

Harry slowly stepped forward. He did the same things as me, and when he was back at the ground, more students wanted to try. Neville also gave it a go, but he was very nervous. There were several Hippogriffs, so soon we were all over the fence. Malfoy stood with Crabbe and Goyle around Buckbeak, who had surprisingly bowed at him, and I kept an eye on him. He stood dangerously close to the beast, talking to it, and it was no surprise when something bad happened. Buckbeak raised his forearms and in a flash Malfoy lied on the ground, clenching his blood-drained arm.
"It's killed me, it's killed me!" he kept saying.
"You're not dead, Malfoy," I said. "Don't be such a wimp."
"Someone help me to get him outta here," Hagrid said nervously.
Hagrid took Malfoy from the ground and I walked to him. Malfoy could get Hagrid sacked.
"I know healing spells," I said, getting out my wand.
"No, you'll make it worse, you'll- you'll curse me!" Malfoy said dramatically.
"It's okay, Jynx," Hagrid said. "I'll get him to the hospital wing." I nodded and stepped out of the way.
