We went towards the Great Hall, but Professor McGonagall called me, Harry and Hermione to her office. This couldn't be good.
"Professor Lupin sent an owl to say that you were taken ill on the train, Potter. And you as well, miss Black."
I looked at Harry. It was about the Dementors. Madam Pomfrey came in.
"I'm fine, really," Harry said.
"Yeah, I'm alright," I quickly said.
Madam Pomfrey ignored us and stood close to check on us.
"Have you been doing something dangerous again?"
"It was a Dementor, Poppy," McGonagall said. "Potter had passed out. Black, however, not."
Madam Pomfrey shook her head, while putting her hand on ours.
"Setting Dementors around a school," she muttered to herself. "Potter won't be the only one to collapse. Yes, they're all clammy."
"What do they need?" McGonagall asked. "A night in the hospital maybe?"
"I'm fine!" Harry said, stepping away. I wasn't really fine, but if the school came to know that Harry and I were in the hospital because of the Dementors, we would be even more stared at.
"Well, at least you should have some chocolate," Madam Pomfrey said.
"Professor Lupin already gave us some," I quickly said.
"Did he?" She raised an eyebrow. "Finally a Defence against the Dark Arts teacher who knows his remedies."
"You two are sure you are alright?" McGonagall asked.
"Yes," we both convincingly said.
"Well, in that case, please wait outside, while I have a word with miss Granger. Then you three can go down to the feast."Relieved, I stood up and waited a few minutes outside with Harry.
"Well, I hope we never have to start our year like that again," Harry said.
"Yeah, me neither."
Hermione came happy looking outside, with McGonagall, and we went to the Great Hall. Professor Flitwick just carried the Sorting Hat away.
"We missed the Sorting," Hermione said sadly.
We walked to the Gryffindor table, and I felt all eyes on me. I didn't want so much attention, but that was unavoidable this year.Dumbledore welcomed us, and talked a bit about the Dementors. They were around on Ministry of Magic business, and they stood at every entrance to the grounds. Nobody was allowed to leave without permission, because Dementors could not be fooled with disguises, tricks or Invisibility Cloaks.
"It is not in the nature of Dementors to understand excuses," Dumbledore said. "I therefore warn everyone to not give them a reason to harm you. I look to the Prefects, and the new Head Boy and Head Girl, to make sure no one gets hurt by the Dementors."
With Head Boy, I noticed, he meant Percy, who was pridefully looking around, not far away from us.
"On a happier note, I am pleased to welcome our new teachers. Firstly, Professor Lupin, who will be filling the post of Defence against the Dark Arts."
The applause he got was not very enthusiastic, but the ones who had already met him on the train, including me, were. This man had saved my life. I would be delighted to have him as my Dark Arts teacher. I could actually learn a thing or two from him.
"And second, I am sorry to say that Professor Kettleburn has retired at the end of the year to spend some time with his remaining limbs, so Hagrid will be teaching Care of Magical Creatures in his place."
Especially our table erupted with applause, while we looked at each other.
"We should've know!" Ron said. "Who else would send us a biting book?"
It was true, among the books we had to buy for this year, was a Monster Book of Monsters, that, if you didn't put something like a belt around it, would actually bite.
Hagrid was red in the face, but had a broad smile. He really deserved it.Dumbledore ended his speech, and I discovered that I was really hungry. I finally had time to catch up with my friends to see what they had been up to this summer. Harry had a terrible summer, like always. The three of them already met up in Diagon Alley to but their school supplies. Mum always made sure Neville and I had our stuff well in advance. She also made sure the letters she had to sign for Hogsmeade were already delivered at school, because Neville seemed to lose things really fast, and he forgot things quite fast as well. Like passwords.
Every week, there would be a new password for the houses, so Neville had made a list with all the passwords so he wouldn't be stuck outside the Gryffindor tower.
We made our way to the dormitories, and we didn't talk much, because we were all tired.
