------------------------------------------------"Charles why does it feel like I'm the only one trying here? You've grown distant from me, we can talk through this. If this is about the job offer I got, I won't take it, I won't move. Please don't do this, I love you" Kika said sobbing.
Tears spilled from Charles face, he couldn't even look her in the eyes. "I'm sorry, I just can't do this anymore. It isn't fair to either of us to choose between our careers and our relationship. We both travel too much, at opposite schedules. I need to make the decision that is best for both of us, especially for you. I love you so much, and I always will, but we want different things. Maybe fate will bring us together again... and I pray it does."
As those words left his lips, Charles was yet to realize he had made the biggest mistake. Would fate be kind to them in the future? Or did he let go of the one thing that made him the happiest.
2 years later...
Kika was laughing over a joke that her friends were telling when she saw everyone's heads turn toward the front door. She wasn't sure who else was missing, since majority of her friend group was here. But when she saw him, she should have known. Green eyes sparkling, his dimples on full display. She had an easy feeling in the pit of her stomach.
They shared a mutual friend, how could she forget? She assumed he would have been traveling for a race. She grew panicked, she hadn't seen him in person for two years. She attempted to run to the backyard, she knew she would eventually have to face him. She needed a moment to collect her thoughts.
As Charles entered the house with his friends, he was excited to relax and let loose. In the corner of his eye he thought he saw someone familiar. He brushed it off, knowing it couldn't have been here. Last he heard, she ended up taking that promotion, moving to Switzerland and hadn't been back to Monaco, aside from visiting family.
Charles was right to assume she wouldn't be there, because she wouldn't have been normally, aside from that fact that she just moved back home. She had recently gotten another promotion, allowing her to work remotely, so she decided to go back to Monaco.
He brushed off the weird feeling he had and greeted his friends. There were only about 20 people in total, so it was a nice intimate setting. He saw the mutual friend he shared with Kika and walked over to him. "Hey mate, great party! Thanks for the invite!" he said, clapping him on the back.
"Anytime Charlie, glad you're in town for it. Congrats on the Monza win! By the way, I urm...forgot to.. um mention to you that I invi-"
"Antony get your ass over here, SHOTS!!" someone interrupted them two, pulling his friend away. Weird, Charles though to himself. He proceeded to join his friends back in their circle as they were discussing a boating trip they wanted to take during the summer.
All of a sudden Charles felt his heart rate accelerate out of no where. He felt like the energy in the room shifted. He couldn't explain it until he turned his head, confirming what he had thought he previously saw. His entire world slowed down as he locked eyes with her, his girl, his Kika. Was this fate? Seeing each other after 2 years of no contact? He tried multiple times to reach out to her, only to find that she blocked him from everything and moved away. He didn't blame her, he fucked up, royally.
Looking into Kika's eyes were different. She was staring right back at him, like a deer in the headlights. Her eyes were no longer warm and inviting, they were cold and distant. She turned away from him and he saw her walking away. "Hey I'll catch up with you guys in a bit, I'm gonna go get a drink" Charles said, attempting to run after her.
