---------------------------------River stepped out of the McLaren garage, still thinking of the team debrief with Lando and Oscar. Her first few weeks on the engineering team had been a whirlwind, but she loved every moment of it. Today, she had a little extra pep in her step after getting positive feedback from her lead engineer during the meeting. She decided to treat herself to a quick coffee from hospitality.
With her iced coffee in hand, River navigated through the chaotic paddock, careful not to spill any on her new team polo. As she turned the corner, she collided softly with someone heading in the opposite direction. Her coffee nearly tipped over, but the hand that reached out to steady her was able to keep it in place.
"Oh, pardon me!" came a French accent, followed by a laugh. River looked up, meeting the mischievous grin of Pierre Gasly. His eyes flashed with a mix of amusement and apology as he helped her steady herself.
"No, no, my fault! I wasn't paying attention," River replied quickly, trying not to feel flustered. It wasn't every day she ran into an Alpine driver outside the McLaren garage.
Pierre's grin widened. "You're new around here, aren't you? I don't think we've met before."
"Yeah, I am. River, McLaren's newest engineer," she introduced herself, adjusting her grip on the coffee cup. "It's been...interesting so far."
"Interesting, huh?" Pierre teased, leaning casually against the garage door. "Well, if you ever get tired of those papaya boys, you can always find me over at Alpine. We make great coffee too." He winked.
River laughed. "I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for not letting me lose my coffee, by the way."
Pierre shrugged. "Anytime. Enjoy the rest of your day, River. And good luck with your new role, I'm sure you'll smash it."
"Thanks, Pierre. I'll see you around," she replied, offering a small wave as he moved on down the paddock.
As she continued on her way, River couldn't help but smile to herself. She made her way back inside the team garage, the smile lingering on her face from her run in with Pierre. But as she approached, her focus shifted back to her role. The race was only a few hours away, and the energy in the garage had ramped up...everyone was dialed in, making last minute checks and tweaks to ensure both cars were in perfect condition for the start.
She spotted Oscar near his car, going over some data on a tablet with one of the other engineers. River approached, catching Oscar's attention. He gave her a quick nod, a look of concentration on his face. River had come to admire his calm and sharp focus.
"Hey, Oscar, I've got a few final notes for you," River said, handing him a small tablet with updated data and suggestions. She had reviewed the track temperatures and some of the tire degradation data from the practice sessions earlier in the weekend.
He glanced over the data, a small, smile forming as he looked through her notes. "Thanks, River. I see you've been keeping a close eye on those temperature changes."
She grinned proudly. "We'll be monitoring the data in real time, so just keep us updated over the radio, and we'll adjust as needed. You've got this, Oscar."
He smiled back, giving her a confident nod. "Appreciate it, River. I'll do my best to bring it home."
"Just focus on your race and keep calm," she added, offering him an encouraging pat on the back. "We've got your back here in the garage."
