I was waiting in line at the coffee stand within the shopping plaza when all of a sudden I felt light a tug at the hem of my dress. I look down to see a little boy, who didn't look older than 5 years old, with a sad look on his face. He was alone and I didn't see any adult around him, I hoped he wasn't lost. I crouched down to his level, trying to comfort him by patting his hair. "What's the matter? Are you lost mon amour?"
"Oui..I...I lost my papa" he says while tears start to pool in his eyes and his bottom lip trembled. My heart broke for him, being lost in a busy and touristy shopping plaza. He instantly wrapped his little arms around me, sobbing into my chest. At first I tensed up, not expecting the hug, but then put my chin on his head and hugged him back. I assured him everything would be okay and that I would help him look for his papa.
I stepped away from the coffee line, bringing the little boy with me towards an outdoor sitting area. I placed him on the chair, wiping his tears with a napkin I had in my purse. I cupped his cheek tenderly, "what's your name cherie?"
He leaned into my touch, sniffled and looked up at me with big green eyes, "it...it's...Leo."
"Wow what a beautiful name you have. I'm Andrea, but all my friends call my Andi. Do you know your papa or maman's phone number?"
"I...I don't have a maman. She left us, she didn't want me" he said while tears were forming in his eyes again. A single tear fell from my eye hearing him say those words. He was extremely perceptive of his situation at such a young age. What woman in their right mind wouldn't want this sweet boy? My heart ached for him and his papa.
"Ok cherie, let's try looking for your papa okay? What's his name?"
"Ch...Cha..Charles" he stuttered. I stood back up, grabbing Leo's hand to start looking for his father. Leo's tears started to subside and he was calling out for his papa as we walked around. He was clinging on to me like his life depended on it, afraid of getting separated again.
He was such a cute little boy with green eyes and dirty blonde curly hair. He had the sweetest dimples. I hoped we found his papa soon, but I would stay by his side no matter how long it took.
After about 15 minutes with no luck Leo stopped in his place and looked up at me with those eyes. "Andi, may I please have a snack?" I'm not sure why but my heart melted right then and there when he asked me.
"Of course cherie, let's head back to that coffee stand and we can get some."
After purchasing him a water, some apple slices and the coffee I was originally planning on getting we sat by the fountain, under some shade. I noticed he was watching me intently and I was curious what he was thinking about. I was trying to distract him from the fact that we still hadn't found his papa. "Andi... um.. you're really pretty" he said while he hid himself behind his hands. It was the cutest thing I'd ever seen.
"You think I'm pretty, Leo?" I couldn't help but blush.
"Oui. I wish I had a maman like you. One that takes care of me when I'm sad and makes me feel better" he said while looking down at his feet.
I had to turn my face to hide the fact that tears were welling up in my eyes. This little stranger I just met for the first time was already wishing I was his maman because his was awful. I pushed some of his curly hair behind his ear, then brought my fingers under his chin, lifting it up to look at me.
"Leo, you are the cutest and sweetest boy I have ever met. Anyone would be lucky to have you as their boy. Don't ever think otherwise."
He hugged me again and all of a sudden I heard faint screams in the distance. I turned my head to see two guys frantically screaming and jogging around. "Leo! Leo! Mon ange!! Leo!"
