The Flashback

Amara sat on the edge of her bed, her shaking hand clutching the silver heart necklace Jamie had given her on their two year anniversary. The room was dark, the moon being the only source of light. It had been months since the accident, but the memories lingered.

The flashback started as they always did...vivid and cruel. They tormented Amara, causing her grief even when she wasn't thinking about it.

They had been driving back from the beach, where they'd spent the day laughing and splashing in the water. Jamie was behind the wheel, his hand resting lightly on her knee. His smile was big, the kind of smile that had made her fall in love with him in the first place.

The road stretched for before in front of them, the sunset making the view ahead, beautiful. Amara had been leaning her head against the window, watching the trees blur past, when Jamie turned to her with that grin she adored.

"Amara," he said. "I've been thinking...what do you think about moving in together? Making it official?"

Her heart had fluttered. She'd laughed, suddenly getting all shy. "Jamie, are you serious?"

"As serious as I've ever been," he replied, his eyes switching between her and the road.

She never answered. The memory blurred, as it always did at this part, twisting into chaos. Headlights out of nowhere. The screech of tires. Her own scream ripping through the quiet as their car spun violently. Jamie's arm had flung out instinctively, trying to shield her, but it was too late.

The impact came, shattering the world as she knew it. Metal crunched and glass flung everywhere. The car flipped, once, twice, before landing on its side. Amara remembered the searing pain in her ribs, the way her head throbbed as blood dripped down her forehead. She had tried to move, tried to reach for Jamie, but her body wouldn't let her.

"Jamie?" she had saying, her voice barely audible over the ringing in her ears.

He didn't respond.

Her vision had blurred, but she could see him slumped over the steering wheel, his lifeless eyes... Blood trickled down his face, staining the shirt she had bought him for his birthday last year. She remembered screaming his name, the desperation in her voice as she begged him to wake up.
