Preface

The playground was full of laughter and happy sounds. Kids ran around, played tag, climbed the monkey bars and swung as high as they could. It was a perfect day to play in a small part of Madrid.

Near the edge of the playground, away from the games and the laughing, a little girl sat all alone. She had her knees tucked up to her chest, her head down. Her small shoulders shook, and every few seconds, she sniffled. Her cheeks were red and streaked with tears.

Five year old Carlos had been playing in the grass nearby. He had been kicking at little white dandelion puffs, watching them float away. But when he saw the girl, he stopped. She looked so sad.

Carlos didn't like seeing people sad. His mama had always told him that if someone was crying, he should try to help. He didn't really know how, though. Words hadn't always been easy for him. But maybe...maybe he could do something small.

He looked down at the grass and spotted a bright yellow dandelion. Carefully, he bent down and picked it, making sure not to crush the stem. He held it tight in his little hand as he took a deep breath.

Slowly, Carlos walked toward the girl. His heart beat fast in his chest, but he didn't stop. When he stood in front of her, she didn't look up at first. She was still sniffling, wiping her nose on the sleeve of her shirt.

Carlos hesitated. Then, without saying a word, he stretched out his hand, holding the dandelion toward her. The girl paused and finally lifted her head. Her big brown eyes were still full of tears, and her bottom lip wobbled like she might start crying again.

Carlos felt a little nervous now. Maybe she didn't want the flower. Maybe she didn't even see him. But then, slowly, she reached out her tiny hand and took it from him. Her fingers were soft, brushing his for just a second.

Carlos' face felt hot all of a sudden. His ears burned. He didn't know what to do now, so he did the only thing that made sense, he turned around and ran back to where his sisters were playing.

His sisters hadn't noticed what he had done. They were busy laughing and chasing each other. But Carlos couldn't help sneaking a quick look over his shoulder.
