The only good part of going to Bougie Academy was that Uncle Spencer could not come with her on the first day. Although he had definitely tried to give her a ride and had excitedly told them all that the Barrington Academy brochure said they were one hundred percent handicapped accessible. Luckily he was distracted by whatever was making Uncle D all nervous and shit.

Luci was determined to do this first day better than the last one. She hated being at a school away from Sol who was really not doing good with this and was nagging his grandmother over doing the application for low income students. His grandmother was against it, Sol had said in disgust , because she hated getting charity for anything. And he secretly thought she felt he was too dumb to get in and stay in. But even with being apart from Sol she was devising and developing a plan to be popular at this school. Even if she had to remake herself. Which was why after she had gotten off the Barrington school bus , which was in an awful and bright shade of red , she had hustled over the sprawling green lawn and into the massive front hallway of the main  academic and administration building. Yes , it did have a ramp to the front door, she laughed silently in her head as she looked around and tentatively slipped into the girls' restroom.

It was empty thankfully so she quickly stripped off her blazer and tucked it into her big multicolored backpack. She adjusted her blouse so it looked more like a carefree halter top revealing slightly her bare belly over the skirt. She took her hair from it's usual French braid down her back and shook it out over her trim shoulders. She batted her eyes at herself in the mirror and refreshed her lipgloss; going from a light pink to a bright red. She was not going to look like some poor kid from New Jersey like at the other school, she told herself. She was going for a different image.

Sophisticated.

Carefree.

Sexy even. She was almost thirteen; and even though she was just in the sixth grade it was still in the middle school division at Bougie Academy.

The stall door of the one closest to Luci opened and out came a young girl around her own age. She was more grown looking though and what her Granny Johnson called " too fast". She had wild blonde curly hair hanging messily about her oval shaped sun tanned face and big blue eyes wearing actual eye makeup. Her uncles wouldn't let her wear eye makeup. Just lipgloss and nail polish. They said she could do more makeup at sixteen. Uncle D was especially annoying about it.

The girl sashayed over to the sink area and began to wash her hands. She cut her eyes at Luci.

" You're the new trans girl, right? ,"she asked as she then ran her damp hands under the air drier.

Luci was so glad her skin was dark because she wanted to flush in embarrassment. How did she know? Why did everyone know exactly what she was? This was why she had talked to Glory about hormones. She wanted to know if she could do it like they said she could online but she couldn't find the courage to ask her uncles. Glory had advised her to talk to them but she didn't know. Maybe they would say that could wait until she was sixteen too.

" Yeah," she mumbled softly. " I'm Luci Moore. With an i not a y. I'm Luci. "

" Of course you are, darling! You're the only one starting today I don't know from last year. The school is bragging about you. " She laughed heartily. " They think they are so diverse here. Headmaster Fat Ass From Jolly Old England is loving that you are both Black and trans. Just wait. He'll put you on the cover of the next fall brochure. Anyway, cute outfit. I'm Zora Mayfield. My father is a senator. My mother spends money. I run this school. If you are half as smart as Headmaster Dork claims you'll be my friend. Oh and as cute as you look fix your clothes. " She tossed back her hair over her shoulder and smiled saucily at her. " Here at Barrington Academy Slut Is Not The New Sexy. Unless you are me. And, darling, you are not me. You are just the poor relation of a board member. " Her smile grew colder. " Yeah. I know that too. I know everything , Luci with a I not a Y. "
