. . .
All eyes invariably drifted toward Soobin as he walked through the crowded hallways of Jefferson High. Tall, with an awkward charm and thick-rimmed glasses, he was the kind of cute, nerdy boy who quietly captured the heart of every girl, yet somehow remained under the radar of envious jocks.
Close by his side was y/n, his childhood best friend. She carried a gentle beauty, with soft eyes and a reserved smile that rarely unfurled fully in the company of others. Her shyness made her an enigma, and perhaps that was why she wasn't favored among the other girls; she was always with Soobin, shielded by his unspoken guardianship."Hey, Soobin, wait up!" y/n called softly, her voice almost drowned out by the bustling noise of students swapping classrooms.
Soobin turned, his face lighting up upon seeing her. "There you are! Thought I'd lost you to the history books back there," he chuckled, adjusting his glasses.
"Very funny," y/n smiled weakly, her mind clouded with darker thoughts.
As they walked, Soobin rambled excitedly about his latest project—a robot designed to help with recycling. y/n nodded along, her smiles mechanically timed to his enthusiasm. However, her heart was heavy, burdened with secrets too painful to voice.
The moment Soobin was called away by a teacher, promising to meet up later, y/n's facade faltered. The corridors felt colder, more hostile. Whispers snaked their way through the crowd, sharp and venomous."Can you believe she hangs around with Soobin?" one voice sneered, as a trio of girls approached y/n menacingly.
"She's nothing, just a shadow," another girl taunted, shoving y/n hard against the lockers. The impact left her wincing in pain, both physical and emotional.
"Ugly and pathetic. Soobin deserves so much better than you," they hissed, their words slicing through her remaining resolve.
Tears welled up in y/n's eyes as the girls sauntered away, leaving behind a chorus of cruel laughter. Alone, she slid down against the lockers, her body trembling.
"Why do they hate me so much, Soobin?" she whispered to herself, the question lingering painfully in the air.
Unseen, a figure watched from around the corner, his expression contorted with concern.
Later that day, under the old oak tree where they often met, Soobin noticed the faint traces of y/n's distress. Her smile didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Hey, are you sure you're okay? You seem off today," Soobin asked, his voice laced with worry.
y/n's heart ached to share her torment, but she couldn't—wouldn't—burden him. "I'm fine, really. Just tired," she lied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"Soobin, do you ever think about... about why we're friends?" she ventured cautiously, a part of her desperate to steer the conversation away from her own pain.
Soobin looked surprised by the question. "Of course, I think about it. You're my best friend because you understand me like no one else does. Why do you ask?"
"No reason," y/n muttered, feeling the weight of her unspoken confessions grow heavier by the second.
"I worry about you, y/n. You know you can tell me anything, right?" Soobin's voice was soft, his hand reaching out to comfort her.
y/n looked at him, her resolve waning. The words nearly escaped her lips—words of love, of pain, of the relentless bullying—but she swallowed them back. She couldn't tarnish his view of their world; she couldn't dim the light in his eyes.
