||Flashback||
My heart felt like lead as I stared into Bella's tear-filled eyes. She pulled her lower lip between her teeth to keep it from trembling before turning around, putting her back towards me as she gazed out her bedroom window. Her shoulders were slumped forward, looking as though she was ready to crawl into a ball at the drop of a hat.
Guilt coursed through me. Seeing her suffer was hell on earth. It felt like my chest was threatening to rip open. Every tear that slid down her cheeks was a stab in my heart.
"Bella," I breathed her name, allowing it to linger on my lips. "Are you sure you made the right decision?"
Since putting some distance between her and Jacob, she's been... empty. That first night, she cried herself to sleep, sobbing uncontrollably. She was inconsolable. Even in sleep, she cried for him. Hearing his name leave her lips countless times amid her desolate nightmares was enough to bring me to my knees.
Fear like no other wrapped around my heart and didn't leave as she oh-so-slowly turned to face me. Her deep, brown eyes were bloodshot. Tears glistened on her cheeks, sliding down her neck and dampening the collar of her shirt.
"..Of course." Her voice was weak. Broken.
She was broken, and it was all my doing. By leaving her six months ago, I had destroyed her. I left her in pieces. She was torn apart, and it was Jacob Black who pieced her back together. Her best friend. Upon trying to remedy her tattered, beaten heart, he had left his mark on it. Of course, he had.
Despite adamantly denying that she harbored any romantic feelings towards him, I was no fool. I was certain that she had somehow managed to convince herself that the love she felt for him was strictly platonic, and while she, herself, may believe that, I wasn't so easily convinced. I knew Bella like the back of my hand. She was the love of my existence. And at the moment, I believed I knew her heart's desires even better than she did.
A moment of silence passed between us before she lifted her chin, meeting my grief-stricken gaze.
"..I made the right decision," she whispered, but her voice wasn't full of conviction. She sounded as though she was trying to convince herself more so than me.

Days passed. Each one blurring into the next. Still, Bella's smile didn't quite reach her eyes. I took her hand in mine and placed a kiss upon it. We were sitting in the meadow— Our special place.
She looked into my eyes, but it seemed as though she was a world away. She claims she harbors no resentment towards me for leaving like I did, but since my return, she hasn't looked at me the same. Who could blame her? It was selfish of me to end our relationship all those months ago. Despite having her best interest at heart, I can see now that it was the wrong course of action. Still yet, it was even more selfish of me to return.
