I watched as Edward's wide eyes drifted to the space beside me, his brows knitting. Cedric stared right at him, quirking a brow as though to challenge him.
"And he's just... always there?" Edward asked, looking at me warily.
"As of recently, yes," I responded, chewing on my lower lip in an anxious manner as I awaited his reaction.
He pressed his lips into a thin line, running his hand through his hair as his eyes continued to peer into mine with a burning intensity that had me on edge.
"He speaks to you." He asked, but it sounded more like a statement.
I nodded. "Yes."
He tilted his head to the side, as though he was studying me. "How often?"
Casting a hesitant glance in Cedric's direction, I admitted, "Frequently."
Edward pursed his lips, appearing deep in thought. I was growing nervous under his intent gaze. My stomach churned anxiously. He thought I was crazy. Of course, he did. Who could blame him? Maybe I am crazy.
"You're not crazy," Cedric spoke up, offering me a reassuring smile.
I dropped my gaze to a misplaced stone that was nestled against a tree, avoiding Edward's curious eyes.
"..What does he say?" He asked softly, his voice reminding me of water flowing over stones.
Shrugging in faux nonchalance, I responded, "Different stuff. He... likes to put his two cents in from time to time."
Edward nodded, his eyes flickering over my features. "Is this sort of thing normal where you're from?"
My heart dropped to my stomach. "Um... Not really. No. I mean— Many wizards have been known to hallucinate, but it's never ended well for them. Usually that sort of thing only happens when you dabble with the dark arts. I-I've never— I would never do that. Madam Pomfrey... She thought it was just a coping mechanism. She wasn't too worried about it."
"This Madam Pomfrey... Is she a doctor?" He asked, quirking a brow.
I blinked rapidly, my face heating up in embarrassment. The way he was looking at me... It was as though he was assessing me himself. I didn't like it.
"Um. Something like that..." Dropping my gaze to the ground, I continued, "She's a healer."
"So, I assume you haven't spoken to a... therapist or someone along those lines?" He questioned, his voice sounding oddly strained.
I hesitantly looked up and met his worried gaze. His golden eyes were filled with... concern. It was then that I realized he wasn't necessarily judging me or thinking me insane; he looked.. sort of afraid. But not of me. For me. My heart clenched in my chest at the knowledge.
