After a long first week of school, I was itching to get out and explore the surrounding towns. Waverly, Minnesota was lacking in shops and the sort, so I made my way over to the city of Kingsport.
What I was really looking for was a rustic bookshop called Dusty's. Before leaving Hogwarts, Hagrid provided me with a list of shops that were 'wizard friendly' around Waverly, and Dusty's Bookshop was high on the list.
Having never been to Kingsport, I was forced to ride a bus. It was a good thirty-minute bus ride from Waverly, but I didn't mind. After all, that would be the last time I have to make that trek due to my handy ability to apparate to places I've already been.
The bus dropped me off in front of a quirky looking coffee shop. I was half tempted to go inside just to get a look around but decided not to at the last second. I wasn't here for coffee, after all.
I walked down the crowded sidewalk with my bag slung over my shoulder, avoiding direct eye contact with the strangers that passed by. When I saw Dusty's Bookshop in the distance, my eyes lit up with excitement. Just as I was fixing to cross the street to head over, the sound of someone calling my name caught my attention.
I froze mid-step, turning to see who it was. It was then that I saw Alice frantically waving in the distance. From the looks of it, she was with her sister, Rosalie, and a young woman in her twenties. I waved back, flashing them a smile before turning to walk across the street once more.
"Elle!" Alice called again, sounding much closer than before.
Once again, I paused, turning to face her. She and the others were approaching me; they each wore a very different expression. Alice, of course, seemed giddy with excitement while Rosalie looked thoroughly annoyed. The young woman with a heart-shaped face was wearing a friendly, warm smile. Her auburn curls were bouncing, contrasting beautifully against her pale skin. No doubt, she was a Cullen.
"Oh, Elle! It's so good to see you," Alice beamed at me with her perfectly white teeth when she came to a stand-still directly in front of me. "This is Rosalie, who I don't think you've had the pleasure of meeting yet."
I noticed Alice giving her sister a stern stare and a warning smile. Rosalie took the hint and forced a smile that was miles away from reaching her eyes.
"Nice to meet you," she said curtly, avoiding eye contact.
"You too," I responded automatically, clutching at the strap of my bag anxiously.
Alice's smile grew when she introduced me to the grinning young woman. "And this is Esme. Our mother for all intents and purposes."
My jaw dropped. She was their mother? Adopted mother, of course, but still. She was so young. Remembering my manners, I quickly collected myself and offered Esme a genuine smile that she was more than eager to return.
