The scent of petrichor filled my lungs as I stepped outside, quietly locking the door behind me. It was sunrise, though the sun was nowhere in sight. Thick gray clouds covered the sky, shielding any hope of light peeking through as the sun rose over the horizon. With haste, I made my way towards the tree line with my broomstick in hand, preparing to take flight when I was in the safety of the surrounding woods.

A shiver ran down my spine the second I stepped into the dark forest. I was instantly reminded of my dream, causing goosebumps to erupt all over my body. My mouth ran dry as I clutched at my wand that was concealed within my bag that was thrown over my shoulder. I could hear my heart beating in my ears, adrenaline coursing through my veins when I came to the conclusion that I was being watched. I could practically feel a set of eyes burning a hole straight through me.

"Elliana." The sound of a musical voice came from over my shoulder.

Immediately, I stiffened. Was my nightmare coming to fruition? Was it not just a dream— but a premonition? As quickly as the thought occurred, I banished it. Deep down, I knew I had nothing to fear from Edward. I could feel that knowledge deep within my bones— He wouldn't hurt me.

Slowly, I turned to face the owner of the voice. Despite knowing that I had no reason to be afraid, I couldn't help but mentally prepare myself to be met with a pair of ruby-red eyes.

But, of course, I was staring into eyes that resembled liquid gold. The faintest of smiles played on his lips as he took a cautious step towards me, seeming to gauge my reaction.

"..Edward," I spoke around the sudden lump in my throat, slowly coming to my senses. "What are you doing here?"

Why was he lingering in the woods outside my house? I narrowed my eyes at him suspiciously, causing him to pause mid-step.

"I was... in the neighborhood," he explained, smiling sheepishly.

I quirked a brow. "You're in the woods. Not a neighborhood."

He breathed out a laugh that was void of humor, his eyes growing in what seemed to be.. panic? If vampires could blush, no doubt, he would be.

"You caught me," he admitted, running a hand through his hair and causing it to stand up on end. "I was... hoping to speak with you before school."

Oh. Of course. His kind couldn't sleep, so his mind was probably churning with possibilities all throughout the night. No doubt, he was just as curious about me as I him. And here I was thinking he was stalking me like prey. Wow. I needed to get a grip.

His gaze flitted to my broom that I was clutching for dear life. His brows flew up his forehead as his eyes locked with mine.

"You have... a broom," he spoke slowly, his lips twitching up at the corners as if fighting back a smile. "...Why?"
