Emmett, Jasper, and I spent five days trying to track down the elusive vampire and had nothing to show for it. We tracked them from Minnesota to Idaho, but they always seemed to be two steps ahead of us. Emmett assured me time and time again that the vampire was 'just passing through', but it didn't sit right with me. What set it all into motion was when I picked up on an unidentified vampire's scent mere miles from Elliana's home. At that point, I couldn't sit idly by and take a chance that he was simply 'passing through'.

But after tracking for hundreds of miles, I started to believe that Emmett had been right.

The moment I left Waverly, an ache ignited in my chest. The feeling got stronger with every step that separated me from her. Over the course of several days, the ache turned into a piercing pain that nearly stole my breath. I missed her. Terribly. More than anything, I longed to be near her. Alice assured me that Elliana was 'fine', but the stabbing sensation never let up.

So, despite feeling like a complete and total failure, I chose to return home to Waverly. To return home to her. Carlisle and Esme had been keeping a close eye on the town, as well as Kingsport. Even Rosalie volunteered to scout the area a time or two. Alice, of course, was tasked with personally ensuring Elliana's safety. So far, they hadn't picked up on another vampire's scent. So, with any luck, we were in the clear.

With every step I took in her direction, the pain in my chest lessened. It felt as though I was being pulled towards her— Like an invisible string connected us and was guiding my way.

It was nearing three in the morning when we finally arrived in Waverly. My brothers were eager to return home to their mates, and I knew the feeling all too well. So, while they made a beeline for home, I was running as fast as my legs could take me to Elliana's. The closer I got, the easier it became to breathe. By the time her house came into view, I was practically panting with excitement.

She had told me she was a night owl and even extended an invitation for me to join her, but I was certain she wasn't referring to me sneaking into her window late at night while she slept. Guilt tugged at me, but despite that, I couldn't resist jumping in the tree overlooking her bedroom window. Her curtains were drawn, allowing me an ample view of her curled up in bed. Her back was to me. Her breaths were slow and even, along with her heart rate, signaling that she was sound asleep.

It felt like a giant weight was lifted off my chest as I stared at her sleeping form. Despite knowing how wrong it was, I found myself carefully lifting her window. Her sweet scent hit me like a ton of bricks, scorching my throat and lungs and igniting a fire in the pit of my stomach. Desire blazed through my veins with a fury, making me a bit lightheaded if I was being honest.

Obviously, sneaking into her room was a bad idea. Not only that— It was morally wrong. I wanted to do right by her. Truly, I did. But... She was like a drug to me. Her presence alone was addicting. I was an addict, fiending for a cure— My cure coming in the form of a green-eyed, golden-haired girl who was sleeping less than ten feet from me. After being separated from her for five torturous days, it was no surprise that the demon on my shoulder won the fight. So, I slithered in through her window like the snake I was and slowly made my way towards her.
