My brows knitted in confusion as I stared at my best friend who seemed to be sleeping peacefully in the chair. I slowly approached him, watching as his chest rose and fell with every breath he took. Of all the times I've hallucinated him, I've never envisioned him sleeping.
I took note of the dark bags under his eyes and the pallor of his face. He looked... exhausted.
As ridiculous as it sounds, despite knowing he was simply a figment of my overactive imagination, I didn't want to disturb him. So, I tiptoed across the room and made a quiet exit, closing my bedroom door behind me before making my way to the living room.
My mind was still reeling from the interaction with Edward. I mean, what in Merlin's beard even was that? If Amy hadn't called, what would have happened? Would he have... kissed me? Butterflies engulfed my stomach at the thought, only adding to my confusion. As quickly as I had the thought, I banished it. There was no way he would have done that. Then another thought occurred to me— Would I have wanted him to? Cue yet another round of butterflies.
Edward was a good-lucking guy. There was no denying that. So, of course, I was attracted to him. I mean, I'm only human. But... He wasn't. He's a vampire. A hundred-and-twenty-two-year-old vampire, might I add. The connection I felt towards him could very well be due to that fact. I mean, Edward told me himself— To be near a vampire is to be drawn to them. It's part of their allure. Is that the reason why the thought of him has my heart jumping to my throat?
Even if that wasn't the case... Even if I was drawn to him for other reasons, I was all too aware that nothing could come from it. For so many reasons. He was my friend, and I truly valued our friendship. I wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize that. Besides, Edward's heart was elsewhere. Vampires are unchanging, meaning— His heart will always belong to Bella.
A wave of melancholy washed over me. No, not because I was 'jealous'. Knowing that Edward would never have the opportunity to fall in love again was heartbreaking. He, of all people, deserved a happy ending. I felt that he was robbed of that, and my heart broke for him.
Needing a distraction, I plopped down on the couch and called Amy. Of course, she picked up on the first ring.
"Finally!" She exclaimed through the phone. I could hear the exasperation in her voice. "Elle, I'm seriously freaking out. The dance is this week, and I still don't have a date. What do I do?!"
That was the crisis? I couldn't help but smile. Amy was definitely the distraction I needed.
"What about Corbin?" I suggested, absentmindedly flipping through a National Geographic magazine that was lying on the coffee table.
"You don't plan on asking him?"
"No," I was quick to say. "I really don't plan on asking anyone, Amy. I know you're appalled at the thought of me 'flying solo', but I don't—"
