My cheeks heated up under Edward's intense gaze, his ember eyes holding mine hostage as a smile flitted to his lips. Cedric sat down beside me, his head swiveling back and forth from me to Edward. My friend's disapproving frown didn't leave his face. I stole a quick glance in his direction, feeling a bit confused.
Don't get me wrong— I was used to Cedric popping up here and there on occasion, but rarely did he make himself comfortable. He usually stays long enough to make a sly remark before vanishing. The only time he stays for longer than a minute or two is when I need comforting of some sort, and even then, he never stays longer than a few minutes.
Safe to say, I was confused. Forcing my eyes away from my hallucination, I returned Edward's smile.
"I'm all ears," he said, his smile growing.
Choosing to ignore Cedric's scowling face, I inhaled deeply before I began telling my story, "Up until the age of eleven, I never thought of myself as special. I was... perfectly average in every way. I was never particularly good at sports, nor did I 'excel' in school. The only talent I had was piano and, even then, I was mediocre at best."
"I highly doubt you were mediocre at anything," Edward commented, holding my gaze intently.
I blinked slowly, processing his words. Cedric scoffed, shaking his head in annoyance.
"Is this guy for real?" He asked, his frown deepening.
I opened my mouth, preparing to scold him for being rude before I caught myself. Flashing Edward a sheepish grin, I cleared my throat and said, "Thanks, but believe me— I was. But all that changed on my eleventh birthday when a strange woman knocked on my door. I remember thinking she was dressed so funny.. She had on a light brown dress that looked more like a costume and a tall pointy hat. Turns out, she was a professor at Hogwarts. Professor Sprout."
I smiled fondly at the memory. Edward seemed to be hanging on to my every word.
"She explained to me and my parents that I was a witch. A Muggle-born witch. And that I was accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."
His brows flew up his head. "Muggle-born? What does that mean?"
"A Muggle is someone who doesn't have magic. Here in the states, they call them No-Maj. Neither of my parents have magic, so I'm what they call 'Muggle-born'," I explained, frowning as I recalled the unfair treatment that I received from many students due to the fact. "A portion of the wizarding community is prejudiced against those like me; most of them being Pure-bloods. But, of course, I wasn't aware of that little tidbit until I got to Hogwarts. I hadn't the slightest idea what 'Mudblood' even meant."
Cedric's jaw clenched, anger brewing in his stormy eyes. "Reining and his minions. Obsolete dingbats."
Edward arched a brow, looking at me curiously. "What does it mean?"
