I was sitting in the dimly lit apartment, surrounded by a cluttered table. To my left, there was a sizeable pile of mail, and to my right, the calendar lay open, waiting to be filled with important dates. I carefully examined each letter, checked for tournament invitations, and meticulously noted down the corresponding dates in the calendar. Despite the chill in the air, I pulled my shirt a little closer to shield myself from the cold.
As I glanced at the calendar, my attention was drawn to the date for the Oxford championship. I reached for a pen to mark it, only to find that it was already solemnly marked off in red, with her name inscribed beside it.
'Damn it, it's my weekend with Bella.'
I'm sure I can move her to the next weekend, she's a big girl she'll understand I'm busy. Even if I had already moved her weekend three or four times before this, I sighed but moved her weekend even if I felt a little bad about it.
I was diligently working on my tasks when I heard my phone ringing from across the room. Letting out a tired sigh, I pushed my chair back and made my way across the apartment to where the black rotary phone rested. As I picked it up and held it to my ear, I wondered who could be calling at this hour.
"Hello?"
"Mr Watts?" The voice asked,
"Yes, speaking." I nodded,
"Hello sir, this is Eastfield Hospital," he explained, "It's a call regarding your ex-wife Y/n and daughter Bella."
"Y/n! Bella! Is Bella okay!" I asked in a panic,
"The two got into a car accident, you're still on the paperwork could you come down?"
"Yeah, no problem I'll be right there," I said before I hung up,
I hastily changed into a more presentable outfit, ensuring that I had my keys, and then proceeded to make my way across town to Eastfield Hospital.
As I entered the hospital, I tried to maintain a composed demeanour despite my sense of urgency.
"Benny Watts, My ex-wife and my daughter are here?"
"Yes right this way sir," the nurse said starting to lead the way,
"What happened?"
"Drunk driver came rocketing up the wrong side of the road, police are dealing with it."
"How are the girls?"
"Bella sustained some whiplash and a few glass cuts, Y/n is uhh..."
"Is?"
"She's been left comatose, we're working on things."
I nodded, trying to stifle my rising panic, as she opened the door to a dimly lit room. There, Y/n lay in the hospital bed, connected to an array of beeping machines, her eyes closed as if lost in a serene slumber. Bella sat by her side in her black dress and ripped tights her Y/H/C hair up in a messy bun, tightly wrapped in bandages, a stoic expression on her face.
"Come here sweetheart," I cooed immediately wrapping my arms around Bella and kissing her forehead checking her over as I did, but she didn't hug me back, "You okay?"
"I'm fine Dad," She said dismissively pushing me away,
"Well excuse me for being worried about my daughter," I chuckled giving her another kiss but she once again pushed me off, "What happened?"
"Mom was driving me home from dance class, some guy just came up in front of us and rammed us,"
"Why were you at dance classes so late?"
