Y/n was still a little tender and raw, her eyes and nose red and a little stuffy after the day she'd had. She'd had her first loss at a tournament in her whole chess career, her sponsor dropped her, and her boyfriend broke up with her. So benny invited her to come to stay with him in new York understanding she'd be a little fragile and wanted to keep an eye on her and look after her

Benny shut the door behind her and glanced over his shoulder, he could see she had been crying and not holding it together as much as she tried to. He removed his trench coat and hung it up, his tall frame towering above her as he turned back and looked down at her "You okay kiddo?" He said a lot softer than he usually did

Y/n nodded still holding her jacket around her, she was obviously lieing but did her best to be brave

Benny could see straight through her, he'd been around her long enough to know when she was putting on a strong front and when she really wasn't okay He placed a gentle but firm hand on her shoulder "You've been cryin' all day, don't bullshit me y/n" he said bluntly

she whined and wrapped her arms around Benny's torso, sniffling and silently crying as she nuzzles into his shirt,

Benny wrapped his arms around her, letting her bury her face against him as he held her close and stroked a hand over her back, He hated seeing her cry "It's okay, you don't have to pretend to be okay with me, let it out"

she softly cried rubbing her nose against his chest,

He sighed and held her close, his hand rubbing soothingly up and down her spine as he leaned down so his cheek could rest on top of her head. Despite his usually cocky manner he was surprisingly soft and sweet with her

after a while she pulled away sniffling the last of her tears away, having left wet patches across his shirt from her tears

He looked down at the mascara marks on her face from crying and lifted his hands to her cheeks, using the pads of his thumb to gently wipe the lines away for her He kept his voice low and soft "You look like a raccoon, kiddo" his rubbing only caused the black streaks to spread and mess up the other make up on her eyes, cheeks and lips making it much worse He chuckled softly and shook his head seeing the mess his good intentions had caused, he gave up trying to fix it on his own "C'mon, I'll get you something to clean yourself up"

she sheepishly followed him and washed her face off in the sink drying off to reveal her face once more.

Benny was taken back a little as he looked at her face and he suddenly realized looking at her skin, softly dotted freckles and chubby little cheeks, that in the six years he's known Y/n he's actually never seen her without any makeup, Benny leant against the doorframe and glanced her over, It actually made him do a double take, he thought she looked cute but couldn't quite put his finger on why until he realised he'd never actually seen her without make up before "Huh, looks like the raccoon is gone, you're adorable without that all that crap on your face"

"W-what?" She asked

He realised he'd voiced his thoughts without meaning too He pushed off the doorframe and stepped closer as he reached up and gently pinched her cheek "You're cute when you're free of the paint, you've got nice freckles over these adorable round cheeks of yours"

she softly blushed, but shook it away "I just... I wear it all the time. Habit I guess."

He chuckled "You know I don't bullshit, I don't think I've ever seen you without make up before" He released her cheek and tilted his head, looking at her as he spoke "You look really cute natural, especially with those soft little freckles over your nose, they suit you"

she blushed a little more and sniffled back a tear. "Thanks benny..."

Benny softly smiled, watching her react to his compliments He moved closer, his body towering over hers as he spoke in a softer tone "You're cuter without the make up and you look more your age, I think it ages you a lot when you wear it like an old lady" he teased but his tone was gentle and light hearted
