Marshall's POV:
Even though I could have flown the third floor, I decided to play it fair and stay on the ground like Addison and Tia.
I easily lost that race.
They were already on the third floor, waiting for me at the top of the stairs.
"How in the world are you both so fast?!" I panted, leaning against the guard railing to catch my breath.
"I have longer legs and a decent amount of stamina," Addison chuckled, pulling her hood back over her head. "Of course I'd be fast, don't you think?"
The third floor was located outside of the dome, completely exposed to the open air.
It created a ring around the dome, similar to the bridge inside the building on the second floor.
There were high walls, overgrown with ivy and other plants that prevented us from falling off of the structure.
These walls belonged to the ruins of the cathedral, with collapsed pillars levitating just out of reach just for the aesthetic.
It made the Horizon Library seem older than it actually was, and I liked it.
"C'mon, Marsh!" Addison called to me, gesturing for me to follow her. "Tia's already got her supplies on deck; We just need you to get the fire going."
As a half phoenix, I did have the capability to set everything on fire- If I wanted to.
However, I couldn't spew flames like my feathery counterparts.
If I sneezed, the worst that would come out was a jet of flame, and that was only if I was really sick.
Otherwise, it would be a puff of smoke or a rare, tiny plume of fire.
Because I'm half human, however, I only got the wings from my phoenix father.
My mother is the current captain of Pyronica's firefighter division, which is pretty ironic considering exactly what I am and how I came to existence.
I snapped back into reality when I felt Addison gently tug on my fireproof blacksmith vest. "Earth to Marshie, hello?"
"Present." I chuckled, beginning to follow her. "Are we having story time while we eat?"
"Obviously," She smiled, making her way toward the bonfire pit. "Why else are we toasting s'mores?"
Tia was busy drizzling kerosene over the fire pit, loading in dried logs from the woodpile nearby.
She had a bottle of the fuel in her mouth, squeezing it in her teeth. "Lemme get the last of this stuff out and you can commit controlled arson."
"Controlled arson?" I asked. "Oh, please. This is just the tutorial level all beginners experience before really playing with fire."
The captain spat out the empty bottle, kicking it with her boot and swiftly catching it in her right hand. "Do the honors, Marshall."
"With pleasure," I grinned, flapping out my blazing wings.
Reaching out toward the fire, I carefully dipped the tip of my farthest wing feather into the charcoal, causing the rest of the pit to ignite.
