Once Upon A Time...

There was the Chosen One named Liu Kang. He was the Shaolin monk and one of the Earthrealm's champions. Ever since his parents were killed, he was taken and raised by the monks after he was saved by the God of Thunder named Raiden.

Raiden had trained Liu Kang and then later on they joined the Mortal Kombat tournament to save Earthrealm from the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung and the evil emperor Shao Kahn.

The Shaolin monk was now the sole Earthrealm warrior left in the Mortal Kombat tournament. After defeating Ermac, Raiden received the message "He must win" from his future self and believed the messages he was receiving meant that Liu Kang must win the Mortal Kombat tournament to avert future disaster.

After fighting and defeating both Scorpion and Quan Chi, Liu Kang went up against the current Mortal Kombat champion, Goro.

After besting the Shokan prince, Liu Kang engaged in one final fight with Shang Tsung and defeated him. With Outworld's victory streak broken before they could secure the final victory they needed to invade, Earthrealm's safety was secure.

Everything was happening as Raiden foresaw in his visions. Yet, more cracks begin to form in his amulet...

Liu Kang and Kung Lao make their way to the tower to rescue Sonya Blade while the other Earthrealm warriors go to the Coliseum to fight in the tournament. Together, Liu Kang fends off Sheeva, while Kung Lao defeats the resurrected wraith of the elder Sub-Zero, known as Noob Saibot, and a vengeful Goro. They learn from Goro that Sonya has been taken to the Coliseum to be executed.

Both Shaolin monks go to the Coliseum as things look grim for Earthrealm. When Shao Kahn demanded a new opponent from Raiden, the Thunder God elected Liu Kang. Liu Kang, however, doesn't believe he is the one destined to win and goes to save Sonya.

Raiden then selected Kung Lao to fight in the tournament. Kung Lao went up against the Deadly Alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, as well as Outworld's new champion, the Shokan Kintaro. He emerged victorious but was suddenly killed when Shao Kahn snapped his neck while he celebrated his victory.

Enraged, Liu Kang challenged Shao Kahn to Mortal Kombat. He managed to land a devastating blow upon Shao Kahn, driving his fist through his torso, killing the tyrant, winning the tournament, and forevermore securing Earthrealm's future...

...or so he thinks. Even with Shao Kahn's defeat, more cracks form on Raiden's amulet.

To make matters worse, Shao Kahn survived his injury with the aid of Quan Chi, and was livid about Shang Tsung's gambit backfiring, causing him to lose any right to merge Earthrealm with Outworld. Quan Chi, however, proposed a new plan: supersede the Elder Gods' authority by invading Earthrealm directly. The plan seems impossible at first, since Sindel, the queen of Edenia and Shao Kahn's bride following the realm's konquest, placed a protective ward on the realm when she killed herself to spite Shao Kahn. With Quan Chi's necromancy, however, he could not only undo the protection by resurrecting her but ensure she remained loyal to Shao Kahn. The plan succeeded, and Earthrealm's invasion began not long after.

After a while, things were getting worse. Nightwolf arrived to aid Sub-Zero. He defeated Quan Chi and send Noob into the Soulnado, destroying both the wraith and the Soulnado simultaneously and saving the souls of Earthrealm. Unfortunately, Raiden's amulet continued to crack: their efforts have done naught to prevent the grim future of Raiden's visions.

Raiden decided that he must petition the Elder Gods for their intervention, and took Liu Kang to meet with them.

While Raiden and Liu Kang were away, the Earthrealm warriors were ambushed by Sindel and the Lin Kuei. Nightwolf defeated Cyrax and then Sektor, but Sindel managed to kill most of the Earthrealm warriors, save for Nightwolf, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and a gravely injured Kitana.
