Chapter 24: Letting Serena Go

"I have a wonderful time, Liu Kang," Serena said as she and Liu Kang entered outside of the garden.

"So am I," Liu Kang said in agreement. Then the two sat on the bench as they continued their conversation.

"Serena... are you happy being here with me?" Liu Kang asked awkwardly as he gently held her hands.

Serena began to blush softly as she looked away, feeling uneasy. "Of course I do, but..."

"What is it?" He asked, worried a bit.

"I missed my master and my family. If only I could see them just for a moment." Serena said sadly as she stared above at the stars.

Then Liu Kang came up with an idea. "There is a way."

Serena blinked. "What?"

"Follow me." Liu Kang brought her to the West Wing immediately. After that. he brought a magic hand mirror and handed it to Serena.

"This mirror will show you anything. Anything you wish to see." Liu Kang explained.

Serena looked at him with a curious look and then looked at the magic mirror. "Um... I would like to see my master Raiden and my family."

So the magic hand mirror showed her her master and her family. When it was shown, she discovered Raiden, Fujin, Sonya, Johnny, Cassie, Bo' Rai Cho, and the rest of the Special Force soldiers were captured by Shinnok and Diamond while they were being tortured for fun.

"Oh, no! Raiden! Fujin! Mom! Daddy! Cassie! What are they doing to them!? And Shinnok... he's back!" Serena said, panicked.

"Shinnok?" Liu Kang said, shocked.

"He was sealed twenty-five years ago. Now he's back! I don't know who released him, but I have to go back to Earthrealm and save my family and Raiden!" Serena said, panicked.

Liu Kang felt bad for Serena as he decided to tell her this. "Then you must go to them."

She blinked. "What?"

"I release you. You're no longer my prisoner." Liu Kang said, feeling sad.

"You mean... I'm free?" Serena said in shock.

He nodded. "Yes."

"Thank you," Serena said, smiling at him. Though she was feeling sad about leaving him, she liked spending time with him while getting to know him more. Just when she was about to take the magic hand mirror back to him, Liu Kang shook his head.

"You can take it, so you can always look back to remember me," Liu Kang said sadly.

Then Serena pulled him into a hug, shocking Liu Kang. "I will never forget you. Thank you for everything. It was nice knowing you."

He smiled as he blushed. He hugged her back gently. "You're welcome."

With that, Serena pecked a kiss on his left cheek, shocking Liu Kang more. After that, she eventually left the castle to return to Earthrealm.

When Liu Kang was alone, he went to the balcony and watched her leave. He began to sing when he continued to watch over her.

I was the one who had it all
I was the master of my fate
I never needed anybody in my life
I learned the truth too late
I'll never shake away the pain
I close my eyes but she's still there

Now I know she'll never leave me
Even as she runs away
