Cassidy had never hit the answer button so quickly. She practically slammed her phone up to her ear, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth.
"Hello?," the brunette said, "Is everything okay, Kate?"
She heard the woman sigh over the line, a clear indicator something bad had happened. What was it this time? Someone else coming out with lies regarding what a terrible person she was?
Her ex-boyfriend trying to ruin her life even more?
"Hello Cassidy. I hate always being the bearer of bad news. I wish we called each other under more positive circumstances but...," Kate trailed off, taking a deep breath before completing her sentence, "There are rumours going around that Halton is producing something with Pierce. A 'diss track' of some sort."
Cassidy squeezed her eyes shut, instinctively bringing a hand up to her forehead. She inhaled sharply, no no no no no no no. She could only imagine the kind of publicity that would get.
Unfortunately her over-thinking was correct.
It was already bad enough already. She still couldn't go out without some kind of disguise. On the internet however, things had calmed down. At least she didn't see her face every time she opened a social media app.
If a diss track came out... everyone would be reminded of the lies. They'd probably be filled with even more. Once again she wouldn't be able to escape the hate.
"Shit! Are you joking?," Cassidy groaned, sitting back down onto Jamie's bed. "I can't do this again. I can't— have you found the letter? Please, we need to find it before they can release anything else."
The silence over the line answered Cassidy's question. She gulped, fighting back the tears that were now clouding her vision. She felt so helpless.
She was going to have to sit back and just watch it happen. There was no way to protect herself anymore. No one would believe her without evidence. Why did she have to toss that damn letter away?
"I'm so sorry, Cassidy. We are working on that, I promise! They relocated the furniture of your old apartment, hopefully no one's thrown anything out," Kate sighed, feeling like she'd failed the brunette. "I won't stop until we find it."
Cassidy exhaled deeply, now flopping back on to the bed. Any good thing she found in her life, always came with a consequence sooner or later. She was naive to think that maybe just maybe, thing's were getting better with Taylor being back around.
With Taylor being hers.
"It's okay. I- I know you are doing everything you can, thank you." Cassidy's voice shook as she said the words. "Fuck. I'm sorry, Kate. I really didn't want to cry. I feel like such a fucking baby, it shouldn't bother me this much."
Cassidy desperately tried to hold back the oncoming sobs. She held a hand up to her mouth trying to stay quiet. Tears trickled down her skin, smudging mascara in their path.
Why couldn't she just get over all of this? Why did it make her so emotional? She hated that it effected her this badly. It shouldn't.
It'd been going on for ages now and yet every time it was brought up or resurfaced it felt like a harsh slap to the face.
"Cass, you have every right and I mean every right to feel upset about all of this. Don't invalidate your feelings, don't do that to yourself," Kate said sternly, "They painted you to be someone you definitely are not and they won't just leave it at that. They are coming for more. It's cruel and disgusting."
Cassidy let in a shaky breath but it didn't reach her lungs. That familiar feeling of her throat closing returned. She tried to inhale again in a panic but no matter how hard she tried it was like there was no air.
