Chapter 9

Cove and Auburn shot up, after weeks of inactivity Kailani was excited. Pent-up energy buzzed beneath her skin. "We're here for the dragonet." A familiar monotone spoke.

"No," Cove and Auburn decided.

"Deserters don't have a choice in the matter," Aella spat, the dragons behind her held a torch and she stepped into the light of it. Aella's muzzle was twisted with rage.

Kailani shifted, she hoped for a fight, at least she could do something then. Though these dragons had the blessing of the princess, and the backing of every Skywing and Kailani had infamous parents hated by each of their tribes.

More than even the Talons.

Yay!

"I can go," Kailani offered. Her parents looked at her with near murderous glares. Kailani looked back at them. She could. Kailani swore she could hear cheers in the back of her mind.

'You're working with me!' The voice said, 'many have been giving me a problem, recently.'

Kailani ignored the odd voice and tried to tell her parents that she could do it with her stare. Kailani glanced at Aella, she could be an ally and, if not, she was only five. Kailani could take another dragonet, Skywing or not.

"We weren't asking," a sandwing stepped forward. His forked tongue flitting in and out of his mouth. His tail unwrapped from the neat circle minimally. A threat.

How had they missed a sandwing!

'Plot. Also you didn't miss him, he just wasn't there!'

The Sandwing motioned Kailani forward with his tail. Kailani wondered if that was a swear in the desert. Kailani edged a fore-leg closer. Auburn stepped in front of Kailani. The Sandwing inhaled, exhaling a funnel of flame.

Kailani's eyes followed the flame curiously. Everything went white and the dragonet was yanked forward. Kailani stumbled over metal, it rang from where her claws stumbled across it. Auburn grunted slightly. Kailani's eyes started adjusting and the click of a metal lock sounded. Kailani could see Aella just ahead, shouldering past the guards.

"With me," Aella commanded. Even knowing she wouldn't be able to see, Kailani spared a glance back. The flames' light flickered, leaving the cage in near darkness.

As soon as they were out of the tunnel connecting to the cage Aella dismissed the guards. Kailani didn't recognize the place. They were reluctant but a glare from the dragonet sent them away. Kailani was struck by how few dragons were in the Sky Palace.

"Aella?" Kailani asked, Kailani flinched at the pure hate radiating off the dragonet.

"Be quiet." The Skywing seethed.

Kailani followed the dragonet silently. The caves they padded through were barren, and Kailani couldn't shake the thought that she could just leave but if the dragonet did then she was leaving her parents to a brutal fate and if she didn't, then it was her siblings she was leaving, but to an unknown fate.

The cave curved out, curving in just after, torches lining the walls. While Kailnai could see, it wasn't great. Aella stopped by the wall and pushed a series of jutting rocks. The wall scraped as it pushed back, Aella walked back toward the odd dragonet.

"I- How did yo- What is- How?" Kailani asked, tripping over her word as she tried to process that yes, the cave wall just opened. Aella shoved the dragonet before she could stutter any more words.

Kailani stepped into the damp tunnel, scraping echoed from behind her. The dim light narrowed, Kailani turned just as it shut completely. "Wait- no. No!" The wall closed mercilessly.

"What in the seagull feathers is going on!" Kailani shouted, her heart thudding against her scales. Kailani's wings scraped against the walls. She pulled her multicolored wings back.

'Okay, assuming this is a tunnel I can just go forward and end up wherever, assuming this is a maze I should, hug the wall?' Kailani brushed her talon against the wall. 'Wait. Oh, I'm an idiot.'

Kailani lit her scales, lighting the cave up immediately. Kailani's head pounded and her eyes burned as they always did with her luminescent scales. Kailani squeezed her eyes shut and let the light from her scales die out. Kailani puffed out a lick of flame.

The tunnel lit up in swaths of oranges. The tunnel stretched forward, farther than the blip of light provided sight.

Kailani's talons clicked as she stepped forward, puffing flame from her nostrils every once in a while to be sure she didn't, you know, drop to her death. It could happen, even if she had wings.

The tunnel opened to a room, scrolls lined the walls, gold strands flowing through the bare space like veins. Emeralds and jewels studded the walls, Kailani wondered what it was like for queens to have all this treasure under their control.

The Princess Regent sat on a ledge, thumbing through scrolls. Any trace of hesitance from the few days ago was gone, and the royal appeared regal, even doing the mundane task.

"Can't you have someone do that for you?" Kailani was aware it's a breach in protocol but the heir didn't seem mad about it.

The last princess flicked her tail, "There's something calming about doing it myself." The dragon snatched a scroll and brought it to the table. Any traces of diplomacy and reading between the lines disappeared. "Are you aware you should be dead?"
