Chapter 5

Music filled the air. For once a sense of peace filled the arena. Almost everyone in the arena sang; the deep, harmonic melody wafted through the air, and for once no one cared about their tribe, their alliance, or their queen, only the hope the song brought.

A roar rang through the arena; it was too far from Kailani to hear what was said. Still she shrank back. Chains rattled as Skywings brought the three dragonets of destiny from the arena. The hybrid curled up to sleep, wishing for her time in the arena to end. Preferably with no death.

Roaring startled Kailani awake. Peering over the spike on the tip of her snout, the dragonet saw the Nightwing and Seawing dragonet fighting... Scavengers?

"Well, that's a thing?" Kailani watched with a morbid fascination as the Seawing handled the offense, clawing and biting until the Scavengers stopped moving.

The seawing was dragged out of the arena, and Icewings were brought in as Vermillion and the queen announced the next 'exciting' fight. Nightwing against nearly ten Icewings.

"That's not fair! Even with future and mind-reading abilities!" Kailani exclaimed, heat wafted to her side.

"I know." Peril stated, subdued. "She wants me to fight Clay! And he'll kill me, or I'll kill him and free my mother, but, oh, it's a mess, Kailani!" Peril clacked her talons against the stone, anxious.

"Wait, what's going on?" Kailani turned to face her friend.

Peril took a deep breath. "QueenScarlettwasgoingtokillmymothersoIcalledonaoldlawcalledchamipionssheildandnowHermajestywantsmetofightClayandIreallydon'twantto!"

Kailani waited for her brain to decipher the spew of words before answering.

"Oh, Peril." Kailani started to put her wing over the taller dragon before the heat threatened to burn her. "I'm so sorry. Can't you leave?"

"No, I have to finish this and the black rocks. I don't know!" Peril unfurled her wings some. Flames wafted to the hybrid, but she forced herself to not shrink back from the heat.

"I'm truly sorry, Peril, but I don't think I can help you with this." Kailani inched slightly closer to Peril, who stared at her talons. Kailani tilted her head, trying to figure out the flaming skywing. "There's something else, isn't there?" Kailani didn't need the answer to know there was.

"He's from a blood-red egg! He can withstand fire. And I like him! Kailani, if I kill him, I might never find a mate! It was fine before, but now there's someone I like, and it's a possibility! Peril peered at her friend, but the pity was too much to bear. "Never mind. I'll figure it out myself."

Soon Peril and Clay faced each other on opposite sides of the arena. The fight started, and it was too far to hear. Kailani watched helplessly as they fought. It was clear neither of them wanted to fight, but that's what happens when you're in a murder-death arena.

The mudwing threw sand into Peril's eyes. She screamed in pain. "You could have anyone you want, but I only want you!" Peril screamed as she lunged.

"Oh, Peril..." The hybrid in the stands murmured.

The two kept fighting, and soon screaming came from the queen's seat.

"HELP THE QUEEN!" Someone shouted, and the skywings left the stands, their powerful wings beating the air.

"Psstt... Kailani, this never happened." All Kailani saw was Anil flying away.

And by her talons, the keys to her chains shone. It felt like her first treasure. Kailani could see Peril and the dragonets flying away. Wait, is that a rainwing?

As the dragonets and soldiers flew away, Kailani struggled to fit the key in the lock. Her red and blue talons twisted and turned the key, trying to unlock the chains. Finally, a soft click sounded. Kialani looked around. Swiveling her head, Kailani found that no soldiers were around. Swallowing her fear, Kailani checked the ground beneath her. Same verdict.

Kailani hurriedly freed her other talons and wings. Keys clasped firmly in her talons, she hopped down the high platform and glided to the forest to try to find an entrance.

Kailani felt the wind pocketing her wings, and for the first time in a week, Kailani flew. Kailani grinned, and she must've looked manic with glee, but she didn't care.

Kailani flapped down to the forest floor and looked for an unguarded entrance. It didn't take long; with the confusion in the castle, most were unguarded. Kailani opened her wings slightly, ready to take off. Sandwings took off from the top of the castle, Burn leading them. Kailani crouched and waited until they were black dots against the horizon. Kailani took her first risk and shot from her hiding place to the cave entrance.

It was rather small for the grandeur of the castle. Only three Skywings could fit with their wings spread open and only about five tail lengths tall. Kailani crawled through, sticking to the cave's walls and listening for any sign that she was near the prisons.

Faintly, Kailani heard a commotion. Kailani flew in the direction, letting her ears guide her. Once the commotion was close enough that Kailani could hear the prisoners' muffled shouting, she landed as softly as she could.

Kailani lifted her claws from the ground to prevent the clacking sound and crept closer to the prison. Kailani poked her head around the corner. Red sparkling scales met her, and Kailani gazed down a row of chained Skywings, none of them her mother, and no blue scales that could be her father's.

Claws clacked behind her, "Well, well, well. The traitor's daughter, is it?" An orange skywing towered over her. A sinister smirk on his lips. "Now, how did you get out?"

Kailani cowered slightly. Her mind worked furiously to find a way she could escape; he was taller and stronger than her, probably having been in more fights. Kailani opened her wings.

"I don't know what you want—" Kailani started, opening her wings in the least threatening way she knew.

"Shut up." He growled, stepping forward. Kailani cowered back and squeezed her eyes shut. She flashed her scales as bright as she could, leaving them like that for a few seconds, then flashing her luminescent scales rapidly enough to give the dragonet a slight headache. Letting her scales dim before his eyes could, she grabbed his keys and slashed his snout.

She flew away and ducked into a crack in the wall just as the skywing guard rocketed through, roaring his fury and looking for his subordinates. She exited the cave.

"Psst, Kailani!" An orange skywing looked at her. Kind eyes pointed down a corridor, and she flew down it looking for her parents, too tired to ask questions.
