Chapter 6

Kailani ran down the cavern. 'Not enough time! Not enough TIME! NOT ENOUGH TIME! NOT ENOUGH TIME! NOTENOUGHTIME!NOTENOUGHTIME!NOshut up!' Kailani's thoughts paused before coming back louder while Kailani struggled to assure herself. 'He'll catch up and bring more SkyWings. No, he won't. It'll be fine.'

While her mind raced, Kailani scanned for her parents, worrying that the orange skywing had been lying. This day had been the longest of her life. Even including the day they got captured.

Kailani raced down the hall, holding her claws away from the ground. The pads of her paws padded across the tunnel. The dragonet could see a cliff in the cave tunnels; it was long and dark. Although across it was a short glide. With a glance up and downward, the dragonet opened her wings and caught the wind to control her descent down to the next tunnel.

Kailani felt the rocky surface underneath her talons and bolted. Running down the tunnel blindly, Kailani stopped at a faint glow that shone from one of the cages. Kailani tilted her head as a thought struck her.

Why even were there extra cages? It was clear Scarlet preferred using the arena as a hold and punishment. Well, there was Kestrel, and she wasn't kept in the arena? But if she was, Peril would have been able to notice her. It would be the other way around, actually.

Kailani spotted a soft glow in the otherwise dark chamber of the odd prison. Claws clacked on stone in a very familiar way. "Would you stop that clacking?!" A guard shouted. Now this job was much, much harder for the dragonet.

"Skylar! Get over here!" The guard Kailani stole the keys from shouted. The guard in the cave ran forward and toward Kailani. She scrambled for a hiding place. Kailani settled above the entrance like she'd seen lizards do. Kailani dug her claws into the cave and curled her tail toward her tightly tucked wings. Above the precipice, she prayed that as the guard ran to the guard, he wouldn't see her.

She heard his claws clacking as he ran out and flew toward the voice. The snap of wings echoed in the cave. Kailani waited a quarter of a second before gliding down to the ground. The markings on her face flickered on like headlights on a car before she remembered that light stood out in the dark.

'What's a car?' Kailani jolted at the odd word.

'Ehhh... don't worry about it. It's not important.'

"Wha-" Kailani started, the keys almost falling from her mouth. Kailani snatched them before they hit the ground.

'SHHH, are you trying to get caught? Talk in your head!'

'Where are you?' Kailani asked.

'At my house. Now, hurry up and find your parents; we'll have plenty of time to talk afterwards.'

Kailani shook her head, almost trying to rid her head of the voice. Kailani heard a mutter about editing? Kailani shivered as she started forward. 'Weird.' Kailani took her time, her eyes struggling to see in the dim tunnel. Kailani tried to check the dark tunnel but was unable to see into the dark cages. 'Wish I'd gotten the ability to see in the dark.'

'Meh, you are a mix of two different tribes, so it doe-'

'I was talking to myself!' Kailani inspected the cages as she walked by, listening for any movement.

"Kailani?"

Kailani whipped toward the voice and ran over. Cove reached out to touch his daughter, Kailani scrambled with the keys, hurrying to switch to the the one that fit. Her talons seemed to keep mixing them up, shaking and making it harder to fit them in the keyhole she couldn't see.

"Jus-just one sec-second." Kailani stammered and just as she was starting to worry that she didn't have the right key, the latch turned and clicked swinging open as Cove wrapped Kailani in his wings. Kailani trembled as she relaxed into her fathers wings. Her head led melted into his shoulders and Kailani's wings spread under her fathers.

"How did you get out?" Cove checked Kailani to see if she was injuried. Cove lit up his scales slightly, motioning for the keys and Kailani handed them to him. Kailani noticed with a shock that there were only 6 cages, evenly spaced and lit with a sigle torch, though there were others around.

"I don't know, something happened to Queen Scarlett, I think; I'm not sure it was so fast. And then the arena was emptied of guards an-and then Anil gave me the keys to my wires, and I stole the cage keys from one of the guards here." Kailani explained, following Cove as he headed off with the keys.

Cove ran through the cavern; it narrowed until it would only fit two full-size dragons side by side and barely enough room for most tribes to fly. Even Kailani couldn't fly in this place, and she wasn't fully skywing or grown.

Cove led them to a cage in the dark, keeping his tail dimly lit for Kailani to follow. Kailani padded behind him, following the moving light.

"Dad? Why can't I control the light of my scales?" Kailani asked; she saw his tail-light pause slightly at the question. A pause grew before Cove answered.

"It's probably a genetic thing. My father couldn't control the light of his scales either, though they would change brightness randomly." Cove mused, "And there have been some seawings whose gills didn't work, though that's very rare."

Kailani nodded and then hummed her understanding. Cove stopped at a cage. Cove unlocked the door, and it flew open, hitting the metal behind it with a loud CLANG! Cove stepped back from the weight of Auburn crashing into him. Flame flickered through the SkyWing's nostrils as Auburn greeted her husband.

Some instinct made Kailani look behind them, and something glowing was headed their way. Kailani squinted her eyes at the rapidly glowing blob. Kailani's wings shot open as she recognized what she was staring at.

It was a dragon's flame, and it was headed to Kailani.
