Chapter 7

"Um, Mom, Da," Kailani ducked as the flame whizzed above her. Kailani felt a slight burning in her horn, and the laser blast illuminated a curve further down. It fuzzed out as it hit the wall.

Auburn and Cove jumped in front of Kailani, wings open threateningly. As they blocked her vision, Kailani caught sight of multiple SkyWings before the light of the flame ran out.

The cave lit with fire as Auburn exhaled her burning breath. The SkyWings scattered, flying to the sides of the walls to escape the fiery bolt of pain that was heading to them. The light of the flames stopped as Auburn ran out of breath.

The familiar crack, snap, and whoosh of dragons flying filled the cave with echoing grunts and snorts of flame to help the dragons see. The light and sound bounced off the walls, making the fight all the more eerie. How they could fight eluded Kailani.

Kailani turned to her side, and a well-timed flash of fire from one of the SkyWings illuminated the dragon she'd stolen the keys from. "Hi?" Kailani asked uncertainly, not able to see the other dragon. Fire flickered, and his scales flashed as the light of the fire flashed over his scales. The older Skywing lunged at her. 'Awesome.'

The orange SkyWing raked his claws through the air, narrowly missing Kailani as she jerked her snout back. Noticing the wall of the cave behind her, Kailani looked for a way out. Kailani leveled a glare at the menacing approach of the Skywing. Kailai shot her wings open and flashed her scales.

The cavern lit up a bright white, and Kailani jumped at him, unable to see past the lingering white glare. Clawing the larger skywing's snout in her blindness, and he was gone. The white left her eyes, and she saw the skywing for a second before Kailani was tackled to the ground. Darkness blocked her vision as the weight crowded her chest.

Kailani twisted, throwing the older SkyWing slightly off balance in the dark. Kailani flashed her luminescent scales once again, blasting a tunnel of fire at him.

Blinded, the dragon roared in pain, lashing out with his tail and clipping Kailani in the snout. Kailani flopped to the ground, watching the older Skywing's tail clip the spike on her snout. Kailani jumped, flapped her wings, and dove at the older dragon. The SkyWing grabbed her and threw her over his side.

Kailani jumped up as soon as her claws touched the rocky floor, but a door clicked, and Kailani was locked in the cage her mother had just been in. The wired cage flickered in the uncertain light, and it spiraled to the rocky ceiling, completely trapping the dragonet.

Darkness claimed her vision again, but the sounds of fighting continued.

The flashing flames let Kailani see her parents from time to time. The two were bleeding slightly and fighting off three SkyWings. The SkyWing Kailani had been fighting moved to join them.

The skywing leaped onto Cove's back, digging his claws into his shoulder to steady himself. He shouted an order at Auburn to stand down. Cold fear gripped Kailani as Auburn lowered her wings to surrender.

"Maybe we should just kill them?" One of the SkyWings spoke up, peering at the two traitors.

"No!" Kailani shouted.

"Place the traitors in the cage and follow me." Princess Ruby stepped out of the shadows and commanded the guards. None of the queenly authority that had surrounded Scarlett accompanied her.

One of the SkyWing guards lifted his foreleg to obey but stopped when he saw the others remaining.

"In my mother's absence, I am now the Regent Princess in my mother's absence. You will obey my command. Put the traitors in the cage, and all of you will follow me." Ruby commanded, authority entering her voice and, for a second, her presence. The guards moved slowly and reluctantly.

Auburn and Cove watched the guards and princess leave the cave branch before the two swarmed their daughter. Kailani forced herself not to shrink back as her parents examined her for injuries.

"You're bleeding." Cove whispered softly.

"I'm fine." Kailani reached for her stinging snout. Kailani snorted fire; blood covered the top of her claw and dripped to the floor. The light died out, and the tiredness of the day set into her scales as darkness surrounded them.

Kailani yawned. Auburn flicked her tail over the dragonet's neck and motioned Kailani to lay down. Kailani curled by her mother and fell asleep.

"What are we going to do?" Auburn asked Cove in the pitch-black cave Kailani sleeping by her side. Cove looked at his mate and shrugged before remembering she couldn't see.

"I don't know." Cove sighed, looking around the cage, checking for anywhere to escape from. For the dark cave, the prison was well maintained no rust on the metal or anything. Probably because of the torches on the wall. Auburn flicked her tail anxiously.

Cove set his scales to a soft glow, "Can you hit a torch over there." Cove nodded his head, the liminecent scales around his eyes followed giving Auburn a sense of direction. Auburn aimed to set the light.

Ruby pulled Cliff away from his toys. "It's time to go to sleep."

"Can't I play for just a little bit more?" Cliff whined, turning to his mother.

"No, go pick up your toys," Ruby laughed at the familiar question. Some days she hated the repetitiveness; others she loved its reassurance. Today was the latter.

Cliff picked up his toys under his mother's direction. The dragonet walked out under his mother's wing, happy to be with her. Cliff didn't know why he hadn't seen her much but he had noticed his grandmother wasn't glaring at the dragonet all the time, so he was happy.

Ruby settled on her bed. Her mind swam with everything the Regent Princess had to fix after her mother's bloody reign. Cliff settled under his mother's wing. "I love you," Cliff said, his voice muffled under his 'blanket.'

"I love you too," Ruby replied, curling around her son. Ruby's mind wandered back to the little family in the dungeons. Ruby looked at Cliff as he shifted to a more comfortable position. Scarlett had wronged them terribly, even for traitors. Especially the dragonet.  Ruby held back a growl. How to pay it back? If she let them go, it would break the kingdom even further; if Ruby let the dragonet out, who knows what would happen?

Ruby clacked her talons on her foreleg. 'What to do, what to do? I'll have to check with the guard in charge and make sure a loyal guards is posted. More and more complications. It'll be a while before I can meet up with the lieutenant, though. See if theres something I can use.' Ruby did her best to make her mind rest and slipped into sleep.
