Chapter 5

Mike felt the tension between his brother and the fire nation. The leader's eye twitched, "Get him out of the way."

The warriors moved as one, shooting fire from their fists. The wind swirled, faster and faster, dousing the fires and tossing snow. Then everything was still, absolutely still.

"Are you sure you want to try that again?" Kai taunted, overconfident (as usual). The leader shoved Aang's staff to one of his soldiers.

"Please be careful with that," Aang requested.

'Can you, at least, only stick to air?' Mike's annoyance with his brother was plain in his thoughts.

'We'll see.'

'IT'S A YES OR NO QUESTION!'

The leader fired, well... fire. Each deflected by the wind without Kai so much as lifting a finger.

"Freaking overpowered," Mike muttered. The ten-year-old glanced up at the ship, his quirk warning him. Something fell from the ship, knocking Kai out of the sky.

"Grab him," the leader demanded. Mike wrung his hands harder. Mike's stomach dropped as the leader's amber eyes landed on him. "And him." The teenager sneered.

The guards surrounded the boy, and he compliantly put his hands up. No need for a fight. The soldiers ignored the odd gesture.

"Are they with the Southern Water Tribe?" The young leader asked, only slightly condescending. Everyone a round of applause please.

"No," Sokka shook his head, ignoring Katara's protests. "They just showed up."

"Take the two to the ship." The leader headed to the ship, Aang in hand. "Head a course for the Fire Nation. I'm going home."

Mike allowed himself to be poked forward, hands still up, one of the men tossing Kai over his shoulder. Stepping onto the ship was one of the oddest experiences in Mike's life.

It was cold and dreary, metallic, and cruel, yet the way the ship seemed to sway spoke of the dancing of the water and almost convinced Mike that it was alive. The door slammed shut behind them. They were cut off from the world. It would take immense concentration for Mike to be able to sense anything other than the metal surrounding them.

The ship started as Mike and Kai rushed to a cage below the deck.

Footsteps approached. "So I guess you've never fought an airbender before. I bet I can take you both with my hands behind my back."

The ship glided through the water, swiftly turning around the ice and glaciers. Mike could almost see it as the water passed them. Dazed, Mike stared at the metal hull as the water passed them.

"Silence," A soldier ordered unamused. The small group appeared, pausing to unlock the door. Three soldiers stood around Aang.

Aang inhaled deeply, and a whoosh of air slammed into the man, knocking him unconscious. Aang flew back and landed silently. Mike felt himself skidding back, spinning on his rear, and got up. Mike stumbled up in his daze, his head spinning. The soldier who crashed into the cell fell into his peer unconscious, and the one behind Aang crashed back and lay there, unconscious.

Probably.

Kai woke up and struggled to his feet, swaying—against his will—with the ship. Aang ran to the cell, stooping slightly to grab the keys and open the lock.

"How'd you guys get down there before me?" Aang asked, leading the way onto the deck.

"You must walk slowly." Kai shrugged.
