Chapter 5
Garrett slammed his tray onto the table, Noah placing his tray gently. Ashish and Ausha had disappeared somewhere, leaving the two by themselves.
"What'd the table do to you?" Noah stabbed his toast with his fork.
"Why'd it have to be SO FAR UP!? You know how many times the tray almost freaking fell! Like twenty tim-, are you eating toast with a fork?" Garrett paused from his rant to stare at his friend, who froze, peering at his friend innocently.
"Is there something wrong?" Noah asked, a little too innocently, taking another bite.
"It's toast. You eat it with your hands." Garrett held up jazz hands to cement his point.
Noah hummed, "Okay." He pointedly took another bite, chewing while staring at Garrett.
Garrett wrinkled his nose but otherwise ignored his friends' strange habits. "Where do you think the unicorns are? It's pretty peaceful." Garrett rested his face on his hands. "I think they hatched thinking peace and quiet weren't an option." Noah snorted and choked slightly, swallowing his food, chuckling somewhat.
"We could explore, didn't Nina say something about libraries? We could see if they have a map of the Eirye and see their selection. Maybe we could get a head start on studying and see if we could get a book or two!" Noah calmed down enough to see how Garrett would react.
Garrett pushed his empty plate away from him. "I'm ready when you are. I wanna find Cerulean already." Noah smiled and started inhaling his food; how he didn't choke will forever be unknown. Garrett glared at the few who continued staring until they looked away.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Amber starting to open her mouth, no doubt about to make a smart remark. Amber sneered at the two.
"I guess mainlanders don't care about how people see them if all they can think about is studying." Ambar quipped. Her quartet at her table broke into giggles. For no reason, it wasn't even funny.
"Did you have to learn to be this disdainful, or is it just natural?" Garrett twisted his straw around in his cup, disinterested. He was extremely glad he remembered his straw he'd paid for. It was a nice metal thing with rubber at the top in blue—his element color too! Garrett took a disinterested sip of his drink, listening for any sign of another remark.
"You can't talk to me that way! My father died fighting off 20 wild unicorns! You couldn't handle one!" Ambar shot up, folding her hands.
"Whoa, you can learn something then!" Garrett gasped in mock surprise. "Imagine that." The boy spun his straw in his cup, waiting for the inevitable backlash. Having sisters was good for something after all.
Amber flushed, stalking toward Garrett. "I know more than you do."
Garrett raised an eyebrow. «Сто? Я так не думаю.»
"What?"
«Сто,» Garrett repeated, reviling in the confusion evident in her face. «Иди сюда,» Garrett motioned to Noah.
«Спасиба,» Noah grinned in a way that spelled mischief.
«Пажалуйста» Garrett grinned back. The two grabbed their trays and climbed to the ground, hearing muffled snickers. "How'd you learn?"
"My grandfather went to Russia for a few years, and I have a few cousins with Slavic blood. English is still my first language. What about you?" Noah explained.
"Immigration, baby! Third generation." Garrett threw a fist up in the air. "Oh, that's the library, right?." A yellow book-building hung in the branches of a giant tree. The two boys looked up at the giant, metal-fortified tree.
"I think this is one of them. Let's go in then." Noah stated. Unnecessarily, but neither of the two cared. The two started for the ladder, Noah in the lead. "Time to look for the unicorns then!" Noah exclaimed, grabbing the first ring.
The inside of the library was undoubtedly larger than the outside. Though it was probably an optical illusion. Rows upon rows of bookshelves sprawled out ahead of them. A second floor above them, and the two could see tips of more aisles on the second floor. Behind that, but in plain view, a large air symbol painted in a slightly faded yellow, lightning bolts and clouds painted around it. A wooden guard along the second floor prevented anyone from jumping down from the second floor.
Garrett was severely disappointed, but the rest of the library made up for it.
In front of the aisles were wooden tables with chairs tucked under. Beanbags sat in the corners, and a few more seating areas stuck out from behind the aisles. A librarian's desk sat beside them, a pretty librarian behind it. She waited for a minute, letting the boys take in the library. Probably used to the bookworm hatchlings acting like that.
"Hatchlings already?" The young librarian asked. "Are you looking for your unicorns? Or do you want to get ahead of everyone else?" Noah and Garrett gawked at the lady; not only was she pretty—'cause she was—but she read their minds and thought of something they hadn't.
"Yes!" Garrett accidentally shouted. Too excited to care, he started hopping side to side.
The librarian grinned, "Well, in your treehouse there'll be some basic essentials in your treehouse; I'd suggest reading those first." She winked at them. "What elements are you two?"
"I'm earth; Garrett is water." Noah answered, gaining his voice back.
"Alright then. The library's with your element will be more suited for you, but any element will be useful."
"Do you know where the unicorns are?" Noah asked.
"Erm, look for a group of unicorns; normally they like to hang out together, often with unicorns from their year. Sometimes they'll stay in their element area or look for their riders, especially at first, but be careful; you don't want to get shocked or anything. Got it?" The librarian asked. The two boys nodded and left the library waving bye.
"So... Where do we go?" Garrett asked as he and Noah stopped outside the front door. Noah looked at him and shrugged; Garrett noticed he had light freckles across his nose and cheeks. "Glad we're on the same page."
"Bridges?" Noah proposed.
"Bridges." Garrett affirmed, and they wandered through the bridges connecting the trees to find their unicorns.
"Immigration baby!" Garrett 2024
