"I will do my best."
Liar.
Once your parents heard your husband's offer, they smiled warmly before standing up. Dinner used to be the most agonizing hour but with your parents here, they helped ease the tension a bit. Usually you and your husband would just eat silently with him leaving the dining room first of course. But tonight, the conversation flowed more easily and you cherished every moment of it.
"I'm gonna miss you..." You whispered, hugging them one last time.
"We'll try to visit more often. Just know that your dad and I love you very much and we always want the best for you." Your mom caressed your face as she planted a kiss on your forehead. You could see the worry in her eyes, but she masked it with a gentle smile.
As they finally walked out the door, the house returned to its cold and gloomy atmosphere. You stood by the window, watching the car disappear down the street before shifting your focus back to the dining room where you realized that your husband was nowhere to be seen.
You let out a tired sigh before dragging yourself back upstairs to your shared bedroom.
You hesitantly pushed open the door to find it empty. Just then, the sound of the piano from downstairs drew your attention away from the void in the bedroom.
You turned back, slowly making your way down the steps as you followed the melody. The notes grew clearer as you returned to the dimly lit hallway. You looked forward, seeing a hint of light coming from the living room, casting shadows on the floor.
You peered through the gap in the door, trying your best to get a better view of what was going on inside. There, bathed in the warm light, was your husband, lost in the act of playing the piano. The sight of him so absorbed in the music, something that was so beautiful and personal, made your heart race. His expression was a mix of concentration and vulnerability as his fingers elegantly danced over the keys.
"I know you're watching." His voice cutting through the music made you jump slightly before fully opening the door.
"I'm sorry." Your voice came out as a shaky whisper as you stepped into the living room. Your husband had stopped playing, but his gaze remained fixed on the keys.
"Why aren't you asleep? It's late." He asked, causing you to stand there dumbfoundedly, not knowing how to respond.
"I was waiting for you." You finally managed to say, your voice barely above a whisper.
"Why?" He scoffed before looking up at you with his familiar blank stare, "What do you want?"
Yet again, you felt a heavy weight settle in your chest as you looked around frantically, desperate to get out of this situation.
"A-Are you not coming to bed?"
"I'll sleep whenever I want to. Now leave." He started pressing on the keys again, completely ignoring your presence as he closed his eyes, focusing on the melody.
"Mr. Min-"
"I said leave." He interrupted sharply, raising his voice as a warning but it didn't stop you from trying.
"What is it about me that you despise so much?"
Your husband stopped playing abruptly, the melody trailing off into an awkward silence. His eyes bore into you with a mix of confusion and frustration. You shut your eyes briefly as you took a deep breath, mustering the courage to ask the question you always wanted to ask.
"What do I have to do... To make you love me?"
The room seemed to pulse with the intensity of your question, the soft glow of the chandelier casting long shadows that danced ominously on the walls.
"Nothing." His answer snapped you back to reality.
"Nothing?"
"I will never love you."
