The night was alive with the sound of music. The band played a cover of The Downtown Lights. Taylor felt Quincy's thigh move against hers in time with the rhythm. She glanced at her bodyguard, noticing the subtle tapping of her foot.
Taylor's face lit up, and Quincy smiled, recognising the song. "I haven't heard this in a while." They said in unison, sharing a laugh.
Lewis was the first to jump to his feet, grabbing a random willing partner and pulling them to the dance floor. Kelly and Austin soon joined, their laughter filling the room.
Caught up in the moment, Taylor jumped up, tugging at Quincy's hand. "Come on, let's dance!" She urged, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Quincy hesitated. "I'm not much of a dancer," she lied, trying to resist.
Taylor wouldn't take no for an answer. "I don't care. Come dance with me." She insisted, pulling her to stand.
Seeing Taylor's enthusiasm, Quincy relented, allowing herself to be dragged to the dance floor, her heart racing for a different reason now. On the dance floor, she let herself loosen up, smiling.
As soon as they were in the centre, Quincy spun Taylor to face her, green eyes silently asking for a dance. Taylor accepted, smiling brightly. Quincy guided Taylor in a shameless, carefree dance.
Taylor's heart soared as she heard Quincy sing along to the song, their eyes meeting before Quincy's gaze scanned the room, ever the vigilant protector. It was a rare moment of carefree joy, and both women cherished every second of it.
Halfway through the song, Quincy pulled Taylor closer to avoid a collision with Lewis. She smoothly led Taylor back into the dance, their flow uninterrupted.
Lewis called out an apology, and Taylor laughed, realising just how skilled Quincy was at dancing.
"Not much of a dancer, huh?" Taylor teased, raising an eyebrow.
Quincy shrugged, smiling. "I'll dance with you all night if you ask me to."
Quincy pulled Taylor even closer. Their bodies pressed together, moving in perfect sync across the floor. Taylor felt her body heat up, Quincy's hand on her waist sending shivers down her spine.
Her mind drifted to the dreams that haunted her so, the ones where Quincy held her just like this. In that moment, Taylor decided that the way Quincy held her, so gently yet firmly, like she was fragile yet unbreakable, was sacred.
Quincy, meanwhile, was struggling to keep her hand from wandering, her thoughts battling against her professional restraint. But when Taylor rested her head between her collar and jaw, she couldn't help but tighten her hold, just for a moment.
"You're a really good dancer," Taylor murmured, her breath warm against Quincy's neck.
Quincy chuckled softly. "I had a good teacher."
Taylor lifted her head, her blue eyes meeting green ones. "Who taught you?"
"My sister," Quincy replied, her voice soft. "We used to dance together all the time."
Taylor smiled, touched by the shared memory. "She must've been an amazing dancer."
"Yeah," Quincy said, her voice tinged with sadness and nostalgia.
The song ended, but neither of them moved to break the embrace. They stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, the rest of the world fading away.
"Thank you for this," Taylor whispered.
Quincy looked down at her, their faces inches apart. "Anytime."
The night was still young, but they had already shared something deep, something neither of them would soon forget. The night took a magical turn, the kind of night that felt like a dream you didn't want to wake from.
