BANG!
The heavy door slammed shut behind her, followed by the cold, echoing click of the lock sliding into place. Dacia stumbled forward, catching herself on her hands. Her knees scraped against the stone floor, but the sting was nothing compared to the fear clawing inside her chest.
"Let me out!" she cried, running back to the door. Her fists pounded against it, trembling. "Please-let me out! Please!"
Silence.
Only the faint echo of her own voice answered her.
Dacia's breathing grew ragged. Her fists continued to strike the wooden panels until her palms stung and her arms ached. The cold metal of the doorknob wouldn't budge.
Her forehead rested against the door as her body slid downward, collapsing into a trembling heap. She clenched her arms around herself, curling in.
What will happened to her now?
She slid down against the door, breath coming in ragged gasps, tears streaking her cheeks. Her eyes darted frantically around the room-bare walls, a small window too high to reach. No way out.
"No... no, no..." she whispered. "This can't be happening again..."
Her trembling hand fumbled at her pouch. Then her fingers brushed something cold. The bracelet. Her last shred of hope. She yanked it out and clutched it to her chest, her tears dripping onto its surface.
"Please..." her voice cracked into a child's plea. "Please take me back. Before the wedding. Before him. Please..." She squeezed her eyes shut, the bracelet pressed to her forehead as she whispered the words over and over, like a prayer: "Turn back time... turn back time..."
She opened her eyes. The stone walls were still there. The lock was still in place. The window still barred. Nothing had changed.
"No-no!" she sobbed, clutching the bracelet tighter. "Please, I beg you-one more chance!"
Silence.
Her body convulsed with helpless fear. The sobs came harder, tearing at her throat. "I can't-please, let me wake up from this hell..."
But nothing happened. The bracelet slipped from her fingers and clattered to the floor. The world tilted. The weight of despair crushed her. She fell sideways, her tears pooling beneath her cheek, and darkness took her.
Upon waking up, she realized she still laying on the cold floor. Her body ached as she tries to stand, as though she'd been beaten. She forced herself up on trembling elbows and glanced at the window. The sky beyond was streaked orange and violet-sunset. She had been unconscious for almost a day.
Then the door opened.
Dacia startled violently, scrambling to her knees.
Nickolai stood framed in the doorway, his silhouette tall and unyielding, his eyes dark as the night sky. He stepped inside without a word.
Dacia bent forward, forehead nearly touching the floor. "Your Highness-please..." her voice cracked. "I didn't mean for this to happen. Please-just show me mercy-"
He looked down at her as if she were a stranger. "After what you've done," he said coldly, "do you truly believe I'd trust your words again?"
"Your Highness, please!" she cried, lifting her tear-streaked face. "Please. I really meant it. I never wanted any of this. All I wanted is to live. I'll do anything to prove to you. If you want me to... to kill the fetus-I'll-"
