Nickolai felt the cold bloom in his chest, spreading like frost beneath his ribs. He forced himself to keep still, to keep composed, though his fingers curled faintly at his side.

“…Why?” he asked, voice low, trembling despite him.

Irene remained calm and serene. Her eyes stayed fixed on the blanket covering her legs, her expression carved from stone.

“Our contract,” she answered plainly. “We agreed that after one year, we would divorce.”

The words struck him like a blade. Nickolai froze as the memory returned—an agreement so distant it felt like a irrelevant matter. He had long stopped thinking about it.

Somewhere along the way, he had unconsciously hoped—no, wanted—to live out his life with her. To spend years, decades, side by side.

And now she was reminding him…of the end.

Nickolai’s throat felt painfully tight. “And after… after the divorce? What will you do? Where will you stay?”

“Such matter will not be your concern, Your Highness.” Irene replied, her tone flat, unyielding.

The blunt dismissal made his heart twist.

He stepped forward slightly. “Irene—”

“Don’t call me that,” she snapped sharply, turning her gaze on him. “You don't get to called me that name. It disgust me.”

Nickolai’s eyes widened. In hers, he saw it—hate. Cold, raw resentment.
And she looked away, as if even seeing his hurt was meaningless to her.

He should have expected this. This is how it supposed to be.

After everything that he did, the pain and the suffering she had gone through because of...him.

He deserved it.

He told himself he was ready, that he wouldn’t flinch. But the moment those words were spoken, a quiet pain spread through him—slow, heavy, and inevitable.

He swallowed, a bitter ache rising in his chest.
“…I apologise,” he murmured, though his voice wavered. “For this matter… let us put this aside for awhile. Your health must come first.”

“I am fine,” Irene said flatly. “And even if I weren’t, it would not hinder the process.”

Even though her body was clearly weak, even though her voice trembled from exhaustion, her determination was unshakeable. Nickolai felt something inside him collapse, but he forced himself to breathe.

Her hatred toward him was unmistakable—raw, unhidden, and painfully clear. It pierced through him, leaving a heaviness in his chest he could barely endure. Guilt gnawed at him for everything he had done to her, everything he had forced her to endure unfairly.

He had failed to honour their marriage contract—while she had abided by it faithfully, he had broken it without hesitation. All because he had misjudged her… because he had refused to trust her… because of his own prejudice. He had wounded her deeply, carved scars into her that would never truly fade. He had hurt her in ways she never deserved. And no matter how much he wished to turn back time, nothing would change that.

He parted his lips, trying to speak past the weight in his throat.

“ I…I know… I have wronged you. I just wanted you to know that—”

But just as he was about to apologise, she cut him off sharply.

Her voice was cold, merciless.

“I don’t want to hear it,” she snapped. “It’s already pointless.”
