Irene, now in a dilemma, didn’t know what to do.
If she remembered correctly, this scene was supposed to lead to the second male lead—the black-masked guard—falling in love with the male protagonist, as the High Priest took care of his injuries.
But now, the plot had changed.
The one seriously injured was the High Priest, while the second male lead appeared physically fine.
As she thought about the changes, Irene became even more worried.
She had accidentally taken the male protagonist’s role—becoming the one who saved the second male lead.
Worst of all, she was also the first person to see his face… and the one who removed his mask.
In the story, the second male lead would only fall in love with the person who saw his face and removed his mask. That was what led to the romance between the male protagonist and the second male lead.
Still… this was a BL romance. That probably shouldn’t be a problem.
But now, everything was off track.
Could it be… because she didn’t follow the original plot as the villainess?
Was that why the story had changed?
Could it be… that she could actually change the plot?
But right now, what was she supposed to do?
Should she just leave them?
Thinking about their condition, Irene couldn’t bring herself to abandon them.
It would be better to treat them quickly, so she could return to Marcus and Marcy.
But what if they recognized her?
Frustrated, too many questions flooded her mind.
Suddenly, an idea came to her.
All she had to do was cover her face.
“Yes… brilliant.”
Irene pulled out a handkerchief from her basket and covered half of her face, leaving only her eyes visible.
Hours later, the second male lead finally regained consciousness.
He immediately sat up and looked around.
“Your Holiness!”
He saw that the High Priest was still unconscious, while a young woman was tending to his wounds beside a small bonfire.
Her face was covered—only her eyes were visible.
He stared at her, probably feeling wary of her.
She met his gaze calmly.
“Who are you?” he asked sternly.
“No one. Just a passerby. I saw the two of you in the river, so I pulled you out. Luckily, you both survived,” Irene explained.
She continued tending to the High Priest’s wounds while carefully observing the second male lead’s reaction.
He seemed to be thinking about something.
When he touched his face, he realized his mask was gone.
Irene quickly shifted her attention back to the wound, though she could feel his gaze fixed on her.
“My… my mask… did you take it off?”
Hearing the question, Irene quickly recalled the answer she had prepared in her mind.
“No. Were you supposed to cover your face? I found you by the river like that—barefaced.”
After applying the ointment, Irene began wrapping the High Priest’s wound.
“Hrrm…”
A soft groan escaped him.
Both Irene and the second male lead were startled.
“Your Holiness…”
The second male lead moved closer, checking on him.
Lucas slowly regained consciousness and opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was a young woman with her face covered.
Her eyes captivated him.
“Angel…” he murmured.
Seeing that he was awake, Irene finished wrapping his wound.
“Your companion has awakened. I suggest you take him to a physician for proper treatment,” Irene said as she began packing her tools back into her basket.
“Your Holiness, how do you feel?” the second male lead asked, helping Lucas sit up.
“Who…” Lucas looked at him in confusion. It was the first time he had seen his face.
“Your Holiness, I am your shadow guard.”
Understanding the situation, Lucas gave a small nod.
“I feel a bit dizzy… and my arm…”
“I’ve applied ointment to your wound. Fortunately, it’s not too deep, so it shouldn’t get infected easily. It should heal in a few days. However, it may leave a scar, so I recommend seeing an expert if you wish to remove it,” Irene explained.
Lucas gave a faint smile despite his pale condition.
“No need, miss. I don’t mind the scar. You saved our lives—for that, we are forever indebted to you.”
He bowed his head in gratitude.
The second male lead did the same.
“Thank you for saving our lives.”
“When I return, I will reward you handsomely,” Lucas added.
“No need, young master. It was nothing. Saving lives is simply the right thing to do.”
Lucas smiled weakly.
“You have a kind heart, miss. May I know your name?”
Irene hesitated.
Sensing her discomfort, Lucas introduced himself first.
“I am Lucas Saltor, the High Priest of the Loistava Kingdom. And this is my guard.”
He turned to the second male lead.
“I’m Arlo.”
Seeing the two main characters of the novel introduce themselves to her, Irene took a deep breath before replying—
“You may call me… Irene.”
