While in the carriage, Arlo inspected every inch of it.
After making sure it was safe, he leaned toward Lucas.
“Your Holiness, I suspect that the young lady who saved us is His Highness’s missing fiancée, Lady Dacia Wickson,” Arlo whispered.
“Lady Dacia?” Lucas looked at him in disbelief.
Arlo nodded firmly.
“She may have covered her face, but her figure and height are identical to Lady Dacia’s. Her hair color is the same as well,” Arlo said.
“I beg to differ. There are many people with similar features and height. That doesn’t mean they are the same person,” Lucas replied calmly.
“I might be wrong, but we cannot lower our guard. We cannot be sure it isn’t her.”
“I thought so at first too, but now I can assure you—the young lady… Irene, is not her. I have seen Lady Dacia Wickson in person. She has the opposite personality. If she were Lady Dacia, she wouldn’t have saved us. If she were truly the person you think she is, she wouldn’t have missed the chance to kill me.”
Hearing Lucas’s reasoning, Arlo couldn’t argue.
“Besides, she has medical knowledge, whereas Lady Dacia has none,” Lucas added, gesturing to his bandaged arm.
With that, Arlo was convinced, though still slightly confused.
“But Your Holiness, if you don’t suspect her, why insist on following her back to her town? We could simply alert our troops and bring you to safety.”
“We cannot be sure the assassins have stopped searching for us. There may even be a mole within the temple, considering how precisely they attacked. Let us lay low and hide here for a few days. Once we arrive, you may send word to the Crown Prince to ease his worries.”
Arlo nodded in agreement.
“Arlo, why aren’t you wearing your mask?” Lucas asked, noticing his bare face.
Arlo was slightly startled but quickly regained his composure.
“There’s no use for it anymore. It has already lost its purpose…” Arlo muttered.
Lucas heard him but chose not to question further.
An hour later, they finally arrived at the town.
Irene thanked Robert and quickly made her way to Marcy’s house. Lucas and Arlo followed behind.
“Marcy, it’s me—Irene. I’m here!” Irene knocked on the door.
Marcy opened it, immediately recognizing her despite the mask.
“Irene, you’re here!” she said in relief, before noticing the two men behind her.
“Yes, I came as soon as I could. Please excuse them. How is your father?”
“I did everything you told me—cooling his fever and changing his wound dressing. His leg is still red… is that a good sign?”
“Yes, it is. Now let me prepare the medicine.”
Irene quickly got to work, preparing medicine for the wound.
She also sterilized her tools to remove the infected area.
Lucas and Arlo observed everything closely.
When everything was ready, Irene approached Marcus.
“Marcus, I need you to trust me. I’m going to perform surgery on your leg. I promise I will save you. Do you trust me?” Irene asked, seeking his consent.
“I trust you with my life.”
Hearing that, Irene began the procedure using the limited tools she had.
She carefully administered the correct amount of opium poppy, and Marcus slowly lost consciousness.
Finally, Irene prepared to cut open the infected area—
—but a hand stopped her.
“Are you sure you can do this? I think it should be done by an expert. It would be much safer,” Lucas said.
“Let go of my hand,” Irene said firmly.
“It would be better to find a physician. I will cover the expenses,” Lucas offered.
“No, please… my father has suffered enough. He’s been delirious and vomiting from the fever. I don’t want him to endure this pain any longer,” Marcy pleaded in tears.
“But it could be dangerous if a mistake happens!” Lucas insisted, worried.
“You don’t know me! You don’t know if I will fail or not! But Marcy trusts me. And Marcus has entrusted his life to me. So I am willing to take this chance—because I know I can save him,” Irene said sternly as she pulled her hand away from Lucas’s grip.
Lucas frowned.
Arlo remained silent, choosing not to interfere.
“If you’re that worried, you can go fetch a physician. By the time you return, I’ll already be done with the surgery,” Irene added.
