Splash!
Irene open her eyes. Realising her whereabouts.
In a big lake.
She floated in a silent lake, her body weightless, drifting between reflection and nothingness. The water was unnaturally still, like a frozen mirror that swallowed the sky.
Her breath hitched.
Feeling scared, she look around the place. She saw nothing but emptiness.
Lost.
Confused.
Helplessness.
A memory slammed back into her mind.
Nickolai and she-
They had-
Her chest tightened painfully.
"Ah... ahh-"
A broken sob tore from her lips. She pressed a trembling hand against her heart as if she could physically hold it together.
Shame.
Humiliation.
A pain so sharp it felt carved into her bones.
Tears slipped freely down her cheeks, vanishing into the water below her. Her shoulders shook as she cried-not pretty, not soft, but raw and ugly. Each sob ripped through her like glass through flesh.
Her fingers curled tightly, nails digging into her palm.
She felt like she was breaking apart piece by piece.
But in the middle of that despair-
something else ignited.
Dacia.
The way she had been dragged.
Controlled.
Used.
Like a puppet.
The sorrow inside her twisted, warped.
Turned into fury.
Her sobs died.
Her tears burned.
Her heart hardened.
The lake trembled with her.
Her head snapped up, eyes blazing.
"No more..." she whispered, breath trembling.
With a lit of determination, she swim to look for a way to escape.
Still, she saw nothing but pitch black around her.
As she glance down, she saw a reflection to the lake. A shimmering light on the water.
Her eyes lifted toward the faint glow far above.
A light.
Irene inhaled shakily.
That must be it.
She reached upward. With her hand reaching to a nothingness.
Irene thought hardly.
I can reach it.
I can reach it.
I can reach it!
Her body slowly rose, the light growing closer-
Irene see that it working. Her heart tightened with anticipation.
When suddenly-
Something yanked her downward.
"Ahh-"
She gasped, thrashing as she was pulled back into the lake.
