A bell rang.

“Irene!”

“Yes, Old Judy!”

“Customer at table number five needs his beef raw!”

“Alright, coming right up!”

Irene was busy cooking in the kitchen while Old Judy took orders from the customers.

As Irene finished preparing the dish, she rang the bell.

“Lydia, serve this to table five!”

“Yes, Old Judy!”

A server named Lydia picked up the dish and brought it to the customer.

“Here you go, sir.”

“Thank you.”

Another bell rang.

“Irene, a takeaway order for customer ten! Chicken crisps!”

“Alright!”

It had been a month since Irene left the Wickson household.

And her life couldn’t have been better.

Since the day she started working at the tavern, Irene had improved both the food and the system. She assigned numbers to each table and separate numbers for takeaway orders.

With the growing number of customers, business was booming, and profits kept rising.

Irene even found someone who could create containers for food based on her design. Many people wanted to buy them. However, Irene didn’t want to expose herself, so she let the craftsman take the credit, while she quietly received half of the profits.

Old Judy’s attitude toward Irene softened over time as she got to know her better.

Irene also became close friends with Lydia.

Even at night, the tavern remained busy.

“Old Judy, where’s Irene?” an anxious woman came in the tavern, asked.

“What’s wrong, Marcy?” Irene said, stepping forward.

“My father… he’s sick!”

At Marcy’s house, Irene was treating her father’s leg.

“Why didn’t you tell me your father was injured? His wound is too deep.”

“I was going to tell you, but Father kept saying we shouldn’t trouble you… Every time you help us, you never charge us. We’re already too indebted to you.” Marcy said weakly.

“Your father has always helped me find rare herbs and plants in the forest. Of course I’ll help him. I’m indebted to him too.” Irene replied.

Marcy began to cry as she looked at her father, who had grown pale from blood loss.

“Your father’s condition is getting worse. The wound is likely to be infected. You need to bring him to a physician. He needs surgery.”

“But we don’t have money for that… I can’t just let my father die… Irene, please help us.”

“In this case… I can’t help you,” Irene said bitterly since she didn't have the tool to do it.

“No… no… you must, Irene. You’re my only hope.”

“I’m sorry…”

“No…” Marcy sobbed, knowing her father’s fate.

“Irene…” a weak voice called out.

It was Marcus, Marcy’s father.

“Marcus…” Irene hurriedly to his side.

“Father, you’re awake!”

Marcus struggled to open his eyes and look at Irene.

“It’s alright… Irene. You don’t need to feel guilty for me. This is my fate. You’ve already done more than enough for me… when you saved my daughter.”

“When my daughter was sick, no one offered to help us because of our poverty. Only you came. You told me she was malnourished… You gave us food and nursed her back to health. For that, I’m truly grateful.”

“No… Marcus…”

“Let it be. This is my end. Let this seal my fate.”

“No… Father… I can’t lose you too… no…” Marcy cried as she hold his hand tightly.

Seeing them like that, Irene couldn’t bear it.

She made up her mind.

She had to save him.

Outside the house, Irene gave instructions to Marcy.

“Change your father’s wound dressing and check his temperature daily. I’ll go into the forest to find some plants for the surgery. I might be gone for a while, so take care of him until I return.”

“Alright… please be careful.”

Irene nodded and headed toward the forest.

She remembered from her studies about the opium poppy—a plant used as a drug for medical procedures.

She needed to find it.

Hopefully, it existed in this world.

For an entire day, Irene searched the forest but couldn’t find the plant.

As the sun began to set, Irene climbed up a tall tree to rest.

She would continue searching the next day.

Using the equipment she brought, Irene secured herself to the tree so she wouldn’t fall while sleeping up there.
