Irene was walking down the hill after bidding the two protagonists goodbye.
However, she soon realized that the two of them were still following behind her.
She squinted at them.
Lucas wore his usual innocent smile, while Arlo, no longer wearing his mask-avoided her gaze.
Perhaps because he was a subordinate, he could only follow his superior's orders-the High Priest.
Annoyed, Irene turned and walked toward them.
"Your Holiness, I already said goodbye. Why are you still following me?" Irene asked.
"I was just about to ask if we could stay in your town to recuperate before returning to our kingdom," Lucas said.
"Why didn't you ask me in the first place?" Irene retorted.
"Because you seemed to be in a hurry, so we didn't dare interrupt you. We could only follow your lead," Lucas replied, still wearing his bright, charming smile.
The same smile she had admired just hours ago now only irritated her.
"I could find a carriage to escort both of you to another town with better hospitality," she suggested.
"However, I think it would be better for us to stay in your town rather than travel far further," Lucas said, gently declining her suggestion.
"Your Holiness, I'm afraid I would be a terrible host to bring two distinguished guests to my small, underdeveloped town. I fear we have many shortcomings," Irene tried again, hoping he might change his mind, considering he was likely used to cozy environment.
"No worries. My guard and I have served in the army for a long time. I'm sure your town's hospitality is far more agreeable than what we experienced back then."
At that, Irene could only give up.
"Fine. We still have about thirty miles to reach my town. Hopefully, we can catch a ride along the way," Irene said as she turned away without waiting for his response.
Lucas let out a soft chuckle as he walked, clearly amused by her annoyance, even though her face was covered.
Arlo, who silently followed behind them, was shocked.
He rarely saw the High Priest laugh or smile at anyone other than the Crown Prince. In fact, he hardly ever saw him argue with anyone. The High Priest was known for his kindness and patience. Even when others caused trouble, he would usually remain silent and only act when necessary.
But the way he interacted with this young woman was unusually friendly.
Perhaps the High Priest had finally found someone he doesn't feel the need to be reserved and cautious.
Usually, people would try to curry favor with the High Priest once they learned of his high status-especially since he was favored by the Crown Prince. Many sought to get on his good side.
Some even tried to take advantage of his charming appearance, regardless of gender.
But this young woman was different.
She showed no interest in the High Priest appearance-or his.
She didn't ask for rewards, nor did she seem to want anything to do with them.
Just now, it was clear she had been trying to get rid of them as quickly as possible.
As Arlo observed her, he found himself unconsciously studying her.
Even with her face covered, her eyes revealed a striking beauty.
What stood out the most of her appearance was her shimmering grey hair-it bears resemblance color as the Crown Prince's missing fiancée.
That realization made Arlo more alert.
As the three of them continued walking, the sound of an approaching carriage could be heard.
Irene raised her hand to signal it.
The horses stopped in front of them.
"What can I do to help?" an older man asked.
"Robert, it's me- Irene," she said.
"Irene?" Robert took a closer look, confused by her appearance, especially with her face covered.
Noticing the two men behind her, he quickly understood and chose not to expose her.
"Oh, Irene... I almost didn't recognize you. Forgive my poor memory."
"It's alright. I need to return to town, so I was hoping you could give us a ride-along with two of my acquaintances."
Hearing that, Robert didn't hesitate. For Irene had treated his illness before.
"Of course. Come on, hop in. I hope you'll find it comfortable."
"Thank you, Robert."
Irene took a seat beside Robert at the front, while the two men climbed into the carriage behind them.
