In the palace prison, Lady Alma had lost all composure.
She clutched the bars of her cell, screaming hoarsely at the guards.
"Bring me the crown prince! Tell him I want to see him! Do you hear me?!"
No one responded. The guards all ignored her plea and cried.
"No... no... I will not end like this... I will not..." she whispered, falling to her knees.
Her hair hung over her face, wild and tangled as she muttered endlessly - a woman unraveling, refusing reality.
The next morning, Libby tended to Irene carefully, combing her hair with gentle strokes.
“The town is in an uproar,” Libby said quietly. “Everyone’s talking.”
Irene’s gaze remained distant.
“They say the wedding was never meant to happen,” Libby continued. “It was a trap — to capture everyone guilty of crimes against the royal family. Lady Alma, Marquis Xander… all of them.”
Irene’s eyes widened slightly.
Libby kept speaking, but Irene barely heard her.
Lady Alma…
Fragments of memories surfaced — not her own, but Dacia’s.
A beautiful woman with a cruel smile. Elegant words hiding venom. Ruthlessness disguised as grace.
Irene shivered.
Her body reacted as though the pain were happening all over again.
Libby noticed immediately. “Your Highness? What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing,” Irene said quickly. “I’m just cold. Please...bring me my robe.”
Libby did so, wrapping it around her shoulders.
A knock sounded.
Hearing that it is the Queen, Libby hurriedly opened the door and bowed.
The Queen entered.
Irene inclined her head in greeting.
The Queen froze - her eyes immediately growing wet with relief and sorrow.
She hesitated first, unable to call out her name.
Irene knew her worries.
"You may address me with my name, Your majesty. It's all right," she said softly. "I am fine now."
The Queen was a bit surprise, but only for a moment. She swallowed, voice trembling.
"Dacia..."
Irene smiled faintly.
Seeing her niece, standing in front of her.
The Queen rushed forward and embraced Irene - careful but desperately tight.
Irene closed her eyes and let the Queen's trembling arms hold her.
There are no words needed to be expressed, to know the Queen feeling.
When the Queen finally let go, they sat together near the window.
"How do you feel, my dear?" the Queen asked.
Irene exhaled slowly. "A little woozy. But otherwise... I'm fine."
Remorse clouded the Queen's face.
Irene noticed and quickly tried to lighten the air.
"You look older, Your Majesty. There are lines near your eyes."
The Queen's laughed to hear such comments.
"You child- that is because I've been worrying about someone too much."
