Irene arrived at the tavern. Before going in, she looked back at them.

“Since there’s no inn in this town, I can only bring you to my place.”

“It’s fine,” Lucas replied.

Irene entered the tavern. It was full of customers, all enjoying their meals. None of them paid attention to who entered.

“Please wait here, Your Holiness,” Irene said before heading to the kitchen, where Old Judy was busy cutting meat.

“Old Judy!” Irene called.

Old Judy turned around and saw a woman with a covered face. Irene then removed her handkerchief, revealing her identity.

“Irene, you’re finally back. But what’s with the covered face?” Old Judy asked, surprised.

“I’ll explain, right now I need your help.”

Minutes later, Irene walked out from the kitchen. With a covered face.

She then approached Lucas and Arlo.

“Follow me. I’ll show you where you’ll be staying.”

Lucas and Arlo complied, following her upstairs.

From the kitchen, Old Judy glanced at the two gentlemen heading up the stairs.

Lydia approached her.

“Is that Irene?” she whispered.

“Yes,” Old Judy replied.

“Why is she covering her face?” Lydia asked again.

“Apparently, those two men know her. She needs to hide from them. If they see her face, they might recognize her, and Irene will be in danger. So if they need anything, you attend to them. Make sure they don’t have to interact with Irene,” Old Judy instructed.

“Sure… but why would she be in danger? Is she a wanted person?”

“You’ve been asking too many questions. Can you just do what I said without asking?” Old Judy snapped.

“Alright… alright,” Lydia relented, afraid Old Judy might explode if she kept pressing.

Irene brought the two men to an available room.

“This is your room, Your Holiness… and Sir Arlo.”

She then pointed toward the next door.

“Your room is right next to it.”

“If there’s anything you need, someone will assist you. I’ll take my leave now, Your Holiness.”

“Lucas.”

Irene was startled by his sudden words.

“You may call me Lucas, Irene,” he said with a smile.

“I wouldn’t dare,” Irene replied, lowering her head.

I still want to live a long life. Such familiarity is reserved for your lover—the Crown Prince! she thought.

“Forget the etiquette. I’m giving you permission,” Lucas said.

“Your Holiness, I am more comfortable this way. Please don’t force me.”

Seeing how headstrong she was, Lucas understood that she wanted to keep her distance.

Even Arlo noticed it.

“Alright then,” Lucas agreed, though there was a hint of disappointment.

“You are my savior. Once I return to the palace, I will ask the king to grant you a stable position. It may not be the position you desire, but at least your future will be secure.”

“Thank you, Your Holiness, but I must refuse. I do not need any reward. I am content with what I have now,” Irene said firmly, surprising both Lucas and Arlo.

“But may I request something?” Irene asked.

Hearing that, Lucas lit up.

“Anything. As long as it’s within my power, I will grant it.”

“Your Holiness, once you have both recovered, please leave this town immediately. It would be best if you lay low while staying here. I do not want to attract attention here,” Irene said.

Lucas was taken aback. That was not the kind of request he expected.

After a moment, he sighed.

“You can rest assured. I promise we will not bring any trouble here.”

Irene nodded, holding on to his promise.

“If there is nothing else, I will take my leave. Have a good rest, Your Holiness… Sir Arlo.”

With that, Irene finally left, leaving both men in silence.

“It seems…we are not welcome here,” Lucas murmured.

“That appears to be the case, Your Holiness,” Arlo agreed.

“Then we shall not trouble her any further. That is the least we can do for now. Go and rest,” Lucas said as he entered his room.

Arlo did the same after Lucas retired.
