In the Wickson household, everyone was searching for the missing young lady.
When Libby entered the room, she found the bed empty.
She immediately reported it to the Duke.
Bang!
“How could she disappear?! You told me she was still sick. How can a sick person just disappear?!” the Duke demanded.
“I’m sorry, Your Grace. I don’t know what happened. She was indeed still sick when I last saw her,” Libby explained nervously.
“The wedding is in a week. Find her! If I don’t see her before then, I’ll have all your heads for it. Go now—immediately!” Duke Wickson, Dacia’s father, commanded furiously to the knights.
“Father, let me help search for her. She might not have gone far,” said the Duke’s son, the young lord Verick.
“Yes, yes… go now. And keep the search discreet. I don’t want this reaching the palace,” the Duke ordered.
Meanwhile, in the palace training grounds—
A handsome young man was sparring with a slightly muscular man.
Just as the muscular man seemed to gain the upper hand, the young man swiftly turned the tide.
In an instant, his sword was pointed at the other man.
“I admit defeat,” the man said.
“So you say,” the young man replied with a satisfied smile.
He was the Crown Prince, Nickolai Vladimir.
The man he had been fighting was his knight, Sir Lawrence.
“I’ve had enough training for today. You may leave, Sir Lawrence.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
As Sir Lawrence left the field, a black-masked man appeared silently behind Nickolai.
“What news do you bring me?” Nickolai asked.
“Your Highness, the High Priest has been sent beyond the border to aid people in need. He will depart tomorrow,” the masked man reported.
“Did he leave a message for me?”
“He only said… to take care of yourself, Your Highness.”
“Alright… then do your job. Protect him. Anyone who stands in his way—kill them.”
“Yes, Your Highness. However, there is another matter.”
Nickolai turned slightly to look at him.
“The Duke has ordered a search for his daughter. It is said that she has gone missing.”
“Missing? Now, how could that have happened?” Nickolai asked, a faint sneer forming on his lips.
“The Duke has ordered the matter to be handled discreetly. He fears that rumors may tarnish her reputation.”
At that, Nickolai let out a quiet laugh.
“Well then… I cannot let my future in-law worry alone. Lend them a hand in finding my fiancée.”
He paused, his smile turning cold.
“And find some men… cruel bandits, the kind who enjoy the taste of a woman. If they treat my fiancée well… I will reward them handsomely.”
Hearing the command, the masked man bowed and disappeared to carry out his orders.
Soon, rumors about the Crown Prince’s fiancée began to spread.
“Did you hear? The Crown Prince’s fiancée ran away in the middle of the night.”
“They say the Duke’s daughter had an affair—that’s why she fled.”
“She probably carries a bastard child outside the border.”
As the rumors spread, they quickly reached the Duke’s household.
“How did these rumors spread so quickly?!” the Duke lashed out in anger.
“Your Grace, please remain calm…” his assistant, Flint, tried to soothe him.
“This wouldn’t have happened if that damned girl hadn’t run away!”
“Father, perhaps it’s true. Maybe my sister found a lover beyond the border—that’s why she fled,” Verick added.
“That filthy girl… I should have her killed the moment she is found!”
“Your Grace, please don’t act rashly. We still need her,” Flint said carefully. “The Queen relies on her to strengthen and stabilize her reign, which will, in turn, benefit your dukedom. With the Crown Prince’s influence in court, the Queen will lose her power if the engagement is broken.”
He continued,
“You are so close to success. Why destroy your only chance because of mere rumors? Besides… the Queen would not mind even if the young lady were no longer pure.”
“Fine,” the Duke muttered darkly. “I won’t let that foolish girl ruin my future.”
“Verick, suppress these rumors. I will write to my sister to explain this chaos.”
