"Soobin, will you grab me the big red bowl from the top cabinet?"
Soobin nodded. He quietly did as he was told, walking over to the fridge and grabbing the big red bowl from the cabinets above it.
“You feeling okay?” Mom raised a brow. She took the big red bowl from Soobin as he nodded again.
Luckily, she took the hint that he did not want to talk about it and began mixing the cabbage pieces with the spice paste, eventually turning it into kimchi. Soobin watched in silence as his mother worked, hoping to grow an appetite, but even the delicious look of kimchi could not calm the swarm of butterflies in his stomach. And it wasn’t the “I just had my first kiss” kind of butterflies. It was the “I made out with my sister’s boyfriend and now they’re both coming over in 10 minutes and I have no idea what’s going to happen or what to do” kind of butterflies.
“Okay. I can’t take this,” Mom huffed, dropping her hands to the side. “Clearly something is bothering you. I already feel bad enough for inviting you all here after you decided to end your relationship. Out of nowhere, by the way. And then said you were fine, but now you’re all quiet and obedient, and you’re not even snacking on my cooking. I know something is bugging you. Is it because Kara and Yeonjun are coming over, but you’re all alone? Should we invite Taehyun or Beomgyu? Would that make you feel better? It definitely would make me feel better about all this—“
“Mom! Jesus Christ— I’m fine. Really.” Soobin shouted, interrupting her. He ran his fingers through his hair, jaw clenched. He suddenly felt irritated. “And no, I don’t need Taehyun or Beomgyu here, okay? I’m just trying to enjoy some peace. That’s it.”
Mom defensively put her hands up. “Okay, jeez. I was just saying. It might’ve been nice to have them over, too.”
Thinking about it for a few minutes, Soobin concluded he’d have a stroke. His sister and her boyfriend, who he was partially in love with, in one room was already too much to handle. He couldn’t imagine having his friend, who caught him and that specific boyfriend together, would do to his brain. He’d definitely would have a stroke.
He couldn’t wait for this to be over.
At that moment, Soobin suddenly felt light-headed. What was he going to do when Yeonjun walked through that door? He would never ever forget the guilt that dropped inside of him when seeing Kara after that…incident. But since that day, he hasn’t seen Yeonjun once. And now both him and Kara were coming over for dinner.
Soobin bit the nail of his thumb, deep in thought.
He wondered if Yeonjun had told her. But if he did, she definitely wouldn’t have talked to him and comforted him about Hyuka. No, she’d be pissed. There wouldn’t even be a dinner tonight.
Did that mean Yeonjun kept it to himself? He said he didn’t care if he was dating Kara. And he kissed Soobin back. Soobin knew how all of this must’ve seen written on paper: Yeonjun was a lying piece of shit. But even with knowing all of that and the fact that he was his sister, he didn’t like or hate Yeonjun any less.
Jesus Christ. Why hadn’t he realized it before? The real lying piece of shit was him.
“Soobin!” Mom shouted, ruining his train of thought.
“Yes—Yeah, Mom?” He stammered. He felt as if she heard all of his guilty thoughts.
“The door? Hello. They’re here. Stall them while I set up the table,” Mom said. She quickly grabbed the bowl of kimchi and darted to the dining area while Soobin anxiously made his way to the front door.
