It had been a month since everything had crumbled, and the house had fallen into a suffocating, uneasy silence. The air inside was thick with grief, regret, and unspoken words, and it clung to the walls like a lingering storm cloud that refused to break. Time had dragged on at a sluggish, painful pace, days bleeding into one another without any real sense of movement or change. It was as if the world outside had kept spinning, but inside the house, everything had come to a standstill.
Kara could still remember the way things had shattered, the tension that had built up to that fateful day. Soobin and Yeonjun had kept their secrets, hiding things that eventually unraveled everything. The hurt, the betrayal—it still sat heavy in her chest, like a weight she couldn’t shake off, no matter how hard she tried. But that was a month ago.
In the aftermath, Kara had shut herself away in her room, trying to process everything on her own. She hadn’t wanted to face Soobin, hadn’t been ready to deal with what he had done. But over time, as the days slipped by, she found herself coming out more and more. It wasn’t easy, but she forced herself to keep moving, to keep going. She had to. Life didn’t stop just because everything else felt broken.
Soobin, on the other hand, had crumbled under the weight of it all. He hadn’t been the same since that day, and even though Kara had tried to give him space, she couldn’t ignore what was happening to him anymore.
Whenever she would catch a glimpse of him, shuffling down the hall or quietly slipping into the kitchen late at night, he looked like a shell of his former self. His once vibrant eyes were now dull and bloodshot, rimmed with deep, dark circles that only grew darker with each passing day. His face had become pale, hollowed out by sleepless nights and the tears she knew he cried. She could hear him sometimes, the muffled sobs that echoed through the thin walls late into the night.
It broke her heart every time.
No matter how angry she still was about what had happened, no matter how much she struggled with her own feelings of hurt and betrayal, Soobin was still her little brother. She could see that he was hurting, drowning in his own guilt and grief, and it made something in her chest twist painfully. She wanted to reach out, to pull him out of the darkness he had sunk into, but she hadn’t known how.
Until now.
Kara sat at the edge of her bed, staring at the closed door across the hall. Soobin’s room. She could hear nothing coming from behind it, but she knew he was in there. He was always in there these days, locked away with nothing but his thoughts and his guilt to keep him company.
She couldn’t let him stay like that.
With a deep breath, Kara stood up, her heart pounding as she made her way across the hall to Soobin’s door. Her hand hesitated for a moment, hovering just above the wood, but she knew she couldn’t back down now. She had to talk to him. She had to break the silence between them before it consumed them both.
She knocked softly, the sound echoing down the empty hallway. For a moment, there was no response. She waited, her breath catching in her throat, wondering if he would answer.
Then, after what felt like an eternity, she heard the faint sound of movement inside. Footsteps approached the door, and finally, it creaked open.
Soobin stood there, looking even worse up close than Kara had imagined. His eyes were red, swollen from what must have been days of crying, and the dark circles under them seemed almost bruised. His hair was a mess, sticking out in every direction, and his clothes were wrinkled, like he hadn’t bothered to change out of them in days.
