The café was warm and inviting, a haven from the chilly breeze outside. Soobin stepped inside, his hands tucked into the pockets of his coat as he took a deep breath of the rich, roasted scent of coffee beans.

He told himself that this would be a quick stop-just in and out-before heading back to his apartment where Kara was waiting for him. They had a lot to talk about, but he needed a moment to clear his head.

The line at the counter was short, just a few people in front of him. As he waited, his eyes drifted around the cozy space. The walls were lined with bookshelves filled with second-hand novels, and there were small tables scattered with students and remote workers.

The low hum of conversations, the tapping of laptop keys, and the soft jazz playing over the speakers blended into a comforting background noise.

It was then, as Soobin's eyes traveled absently over the room, that he saw him.

Yeonjun.

He was sitting at a table near the window, fingers idly tracing the rim of his coffee mug as he stared outside at the bustling street. His hair, dark and slightly tousled, fell across his forehead, and there was a thoughtful, almost contemplative expression on his face. Soobin's heart skipped a beat, the sudden rush of adrenaline making him feel as though the floor had tilted beneath him.

He hadn't seen Yeonjun in months-not since everything had fallen apart. The sight of him now, so familiar yet distant, brought back a wave of memories that Soobin had been trying to bury for half a year.

Panic surged in his chest. He needed to leave. Now. If Yeonjun hadn't noticed him yet, there was still a chance he could slip away unnoticed. He turned on his heel, taking a step toward the door, but before he could make it out, a voice stopped him in his tracks.

"Soobin?"

It was soft, tentative, but unmistakable. Soobin closed his eyes for a brief second before turning around. Yeonjun was looking right at him, the surprise on his face quickly morphing into something more complex. Curiosity, a hint of relief-everything tangled in the way his eyes met Soobin's.

"Hey," Soobin said, trying to keep his voice steady. He forced a small smile, though it felt strained on his lips, as if they were heavy with unshed words.

Yeonjun stood up, leaving his mug behind on the table as he took a hesitant step forward. The sunlight streaming through the window cast a golden glow around him, making him look almost unreal.

For a moment, neither of them spoke, as if the weight of all the unsaid things between them had filled the space.

"I didn't expect to see you here," Yeonjun said finally, a slight tremor in his voice that betrayed the calm facade he tried to maintain.

"Yeah, same," Soobin replied, the tension in his body easing just a fraction. "I just came in to grab a coffee. I should probably-"

"Wait," Yeonjun interrupted, his eyes searching Soobin's face with an intensity that made Soobin's heart race. "Can we... talk? Just for a minute?"

Soobin hesitated. He glanced back at the door, thinking about Kara waiting for him at home, the unspoken conversation they needed to have.

But there was something in Yeonjun's eyes that held him in place-a flicker of vulnerability that reminded him of the friend who had been by his side through thick and thin.

"Okay," Soobin said at last, and they sat down at a small table near the back, away from the prying eyes of strangers.

There was a long pause as they settled in, the awkward silence stretching between them like a chasm. Yeonjun ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit Soobin knew well.

It was strange how some things never changed, even when everything else did. But beneath the familiarity lay an ache that neither wanted to confront, the shadows of their past lingering in the air like uninvited guests.

"I heard about... everything," Yeonjun said, breaking the silence. His voice was quiet, almost apologetic, as if he carried the weight of their shared history on his shoulders. "I wanted to reach out, but I didn't know if you'd want to hear from me."

Soobin felt a lump form in his throat. He wasn't sure if he did want to hear from Yeonjun. The pain from the betrayal still lingered, sharp and raw, even after all this time. But there was also a part of him that had missed him, the friend who had been by his side. The thought made his heart ache in a way that was both familiar and painful.

"I didn't know what I wanted either," Soobin admitted. He glanced down at his hands, fingers curling around the edge of the table, trying to find strength in something solid. "But it's... good to see you."

Yeonjun's eyes softened, and a small, hopeful smile crossed his lips, yet it didn't reach the sadness that lingered in his gaze. "I'm glad to hear that."

They fell into silence again, but this time, it was less heavy. The noise of the café filled the gaps, creating a space where they could just exist without the weight of expectations or unresolved feelings pressing down on them. Still, an undeniable tension hung in the air-an unspoken understanding that despite their proximity, they were worlds apart.

"So, how have you been?" Yeonjun asked after a moment, his tone careful, as if he were treading on fragile ground.

Soobin let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. It was a simple question, one that felt so normal that it almost made him laugh, yet it carried an undercurrent of sadness. "It's been... a lot," he said with a slight shrug, trying to keep his tone light even as the weight of the last few months pressed heavily on his chest. "But I'm managing."

Yeonjun nodded, understanding passing between them without the need for words. His gaze dropped to the table, and Soobin noticed the way his fingers clenched into fists, as if holding back a tide of emotions.

For all the strides they had made in their lives, there was still a part of him that ached for the easy laughter and uncomplicated moments they once shared.

"Look, I know things are... different now," Yeonjun began, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I just thought... maybe we could figure it out. When the time is right."

Soobin felt the warmth of the moment slowly dim, the sadness creeping back in. "I don't know if we can just pick up where we left off," he replied, the words tasting bitter on his tongue. "It feels too... complicated."

Yeonjun's expression shifted, a flicker of disappointment shadowing his features, but he nodded as if he understood. "Yeah, I get that. It's just... I didn't want you to think I forgot everything. I just... wanted to see you again."

The honesty in his voice made Soobin's heart ache. There was a sincerity in Yeonjun's eyes that felt both comforting and painful, a reminder of everything they had lost. "Maybe we just need to take things slow," Soobin suggested, his own voice wavering slightly.

"Slow sounds good," Yeonjun replied, a hint of a smile returning, though the sadness in his eyes lingered. "Let's just see where it goes."

As Soobin stood to leave, he could feel Yeonjun's gaze on him, filled with a mixture of hope and longing. The sunlight poured in through the window, illuminating the space between them, yet it felt as though a cloud lingered overhead, casting shadows on their fragile connection.

"Take care of yourself, Soobin," Yeonjun said softly, his voice breaking slightly as they locked eyes. The warmth of their shared moment was still palpable, yet the sadness lingered like a ghost, a reminder of the unspoken words they both carried.

"Yeah, you too," Soobin replied, forcing a smile even as his heart ached for the easy companionship they once shared.

As he walked away, Soobin glanced back one last time, catching Yeonjun's gaze. There was something unspoken hanging between them, a promise of what could be-or what might never be again. But for now, it was enough to know they were both still here, navigating the uncertainty together, even if it felt like they were worlds apart.
