*First is a flashback of how all the brothers met...then we get flashback from Mav of the deal...
Dame
"Brenna is going to kill you." I murmer as I sit down next to Kai on the wooden ledge on the pier.
Kai lets out a cloud of smoke before taking another drag of the cigarette poised between in fingers. "Us." He says, turning his head to look at me. "Why'd you even follow me in the first place?"
I shrug, "You weren't there at dinner." I say nonchalantly. I don't want Kai to know how worried I was about him. I helped him track down his dad last week, and we killed him. The bastard deserved it. I wish I could purge the world of my demons like Kai did, but mine is a little more complicated. When i first told Kai about all my baggage, he wanted to find every last man and slit their throats. I told him that the majority of the men were in prison.
Still, I wish I could light them up the same way we did with Kai's father.
"Cut the crap Dame. You're worried about me, I can see it written all over your face." Kai says, bumping his shoulder against mine and giving me a slight smile.
Obviously I'm worried about him. He just killed a man and he's sitting here smoking a cigarette looking at the water like shits all 'ok.'
"Tell me this." Kai starts while putting out his cigarette and tossing the bud into the water. "Are you good?"
I am a little annoyed at the question, but I know where he's going. "Yes." I grumble. He's right, I feel just as normal as before we set the bastard alight. Does that make us bad people that we didn't care? We left his body for the cops to find then went out to get pizza.
Who the fuck does that?
"We're the same kind of fucked up Damian. Trust me when I say I'm ok, just like I trust you when you say it."
I'm a little taken back by Kai. He's not the stable one. He's the one who makes rash decisions.
Ok, that's not exactly true. When I first met Kai when I was ten in our group home, he scared the shit out of me. That first night, I had a horrible nightmare; the type of nightmare where you feel like youre freefalling into a pit of lava.
I woke up, covered in sweat, to two bright green eyes staring at me. It took me a minute to realize those eyes belonged to Kai. What shook me the most was the concern etched in his irises.
Ever since then, we stayed close. At first it was just a survival thing. In the house there were a lot of assholes picking fights, so I stuck with Kai who everyone was afraid of. Somewhere along the way, Kai opened up to me and we became inseparable.
Brenna, our foster mom, told us we would never get adopted because of how close we were and she was right. fifteen years old and still in the same fucking home. At this point, we're just waiting until we age out.
We don't speak anymore after that. We just sit on the pier, watching the water ripple out, until Kai has smoked his last cigarette.
"We have another session at the hospital tomorrow." I say to Kai as we walk down the road towards our foster home. Kai is kicking pebbles, his brow furrowed in thought. About what? I'm not sure. Kai gets lost in his head sometimes and I've tried to help him, but it's useless. He's either happy and go lucky or he's out for blood.
Never mine though.
"Ok." Kai grumbles, kicking the pebble in front of him into the street with more force than necessary.
