Mihir's POV
I woke up to the soft light of dawn filtering through the curtains. For a moment, I was disoriented, unsure of where I was. Then I felt her, Tami, still pressed against me, her warmth enveloping me. Her arm was draped over my torso, our legs intertwined. I glanced down at her, her face so serene in sleep. She looked so delicate, almost ethereal, with her dark hair splayed across the pillow and her long, thick eyelashes resting softly on her cheeks.
My heart skipped a beat as I took in the sight of her so close to me. There was a strange sensation in my chest, a mixture of comfort and an electric thrill that I couldn't quite place. It was a feeling I had never experienced, not even with Gauravi. It was disconcerting yet somehow soothing, a paradox of emotions that left me both at ease and on edge.
As if sensing my gaze, Tami stirred, her eyelashes fluttering as she slowly woke up. She blinked a few times, her eyes adjusting to the light, and then she looked up at me. For a heartbeat, we just stared at each other, the world outside our little bubble seeming to fade away.
She looked around, confused. When she saw me, her eyes widened.
"Good morning," she said softly, her voice still husky from sleep. She glanced at me, then away, her embarrassment palpable.
"Good morning," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. My heart was pounding, and I felt an inexplicable urge to reach out and pull her back into my arms. But I resisted, unsure of what to do with these unfamiliar emotions.
"Mihir? What... where are we?"
"In your dad's cabin. He insisted we stay here since it was late," I explained.
"Oh," she said, sitting up and running a hand through her hair. "I must have fallen asleep."
"You did. You were exhausted." I replied.
"Thank you for taking care of me," she said softly.
"Anytime," I replied, smiling at her. "How do you feel?"
"A bit better," she admitted. "But why are you lying here?"
"Your dad's orders," I said. "He thought I needed some rest too."
Then her cheeks flushed a delicate pink, she bit her lip, a habit I had noticed she did when she was nervous.
She was looking so pretty, so innocent, "I... I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't mean to... I mean, I didn't realize I was... you know."
She was flustered, and it was strangely endearing. I found myself trying not to smile, despite the confusion swirling in my mind. "It's okay," I said, trying to reassure her. "You were asleep. It happens."
She nodded, but the tension between us remained. It was as if there was an invisible thread connecting us, pulling us closer together despite the awkwardness. I wanted to break the silence, to say something that would ease the tension, but my mind was a jumble of conflicting thoughts.
At that moment, the door creaked open, and Dr. Gautam peeked in, a mischievous grin on his face.
Oh, shit!! I was still in bed with her, holding her in my arms. She quickly untangled herself, sitting up and smoothing her hair with nervous fingers. My face became red and I was embarrassed as hell.
"Good morning, lovebirds. How did you sleep?" He asked with a naughty smile.
"Dad!" Tami exclaimed, blushing furiously.
Oh my God!! She was looking so pretty.
"Just came in to get a file that I was reading earlier," he said innocently. "And to remind you both that there's a world outside this room. Patients to see, and lives to save. Tami, time to report to your senior doctor, you will find some of the clothes here. Your mom keeps some pairs here. "
"Yes, dad," I said, smiling. "Thank you for the reminder." She said with an awkward smile, we untangled ourselves and got up.
He winked at me. "Take care of my daughter, Mihir. And don't forget, she is your wife now, you don't have to feel guilty or ashamed if someone catches you carrying her in your arms. It is absolutely fine. " He said, my face turned red as she was also listening, what would she think about it?
"I will, sir," I said.
As he left, I turned to Tami.
Wrapping her arms around herself as if to shield herself from the vulnerability of the moment, she said, her voice still quiet. "I should... I should get ready,"
I watched her for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, me too."
She walked towards the bathroom, and I found myself watching her, unable to look away. There was a grace to her movements, a softness that was in stark contrast to the turmoil I felt inside. As she disappeared behind the door, I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
What was happening to me? I had married Tami out of convenience, a practical solution to a complicated situation. I had never expected to feel anything for her beyond a sense of duty. But now... now there was something more, something I couldn't ignore. It was as if my heart was betraying my mind, pulling me towards her in ways, I didn't understand.
I got up and walked to the window, staring out at the rising sun. The world outside was waking up, full of possibilities and uncertainties. Much like my own heart, I thought wryly.
When Tami emerged from the bathroom, her hair damp and her cheeks still flushed, I felt that strange thrill again. She looked at me, her eyes searching mine, and for a moment, it felt like we were the only two people in the world.
" Sorry for what dad said. By the way, Mihir, what were you doing carrying me when my dad walked in on you?" she asked with a shy smile.
I was feeling embarrassed, " Oh!! When I came back you were sleeping in a sitting position, I was about to lay you down without waking you up. You looked too peaceful to disturb." I said.
"I'm sorry about last night and this morning," she said again, her voice more composed. "I didn't mean to make things awkward."
"It's not your fault, you were sleeping. " I said, turning to face her. She nodded, looking relieved.
There was a pause, and then she took a step closer to me. "Mihir, I know Your Dad must have scolded you and compelled you not to get on with the divorce, I can understand that this isn't easy for you. It’s not easy for me either. But I want you to know that I... I care about you. More than you might think, but please don't think that you are under any obligation to reciprocate the feelings. "
