Tami's POV

As the night wore on, I found myself scanning the party for Mihir, but he was nowhere to be found. My heart sank. He was already so upset, and I needed to find him. I stepped outside, breathing in the cool night air, and there he was, standing alone on the terrace.

He must have sensed my presence behind him because he turned to see me standing there. His eyes were distant, lost in thought.

“Mind some company?” I asked softly.

He shook his head, trying to smile. “Not at all. I could use some.”

I joined him, and we stood in silence for a few moments, just taking in the beauty of the night. The stars twinkled above us, and the sound of crickets filled the air. There was a certain tranquility to the moment that made me feel closer to him than I had in a long time.

“Mihir, I know this isn’t how either of us imagined things would turn out,” I began, my voice trembling slightly. “But I want you to know that  I’m here, and I’m trying my best. I know you’re hurt, and I understand why. But I hope, in time, you can see that I care for you and I want to make this work.”

He looked at me, his expression softening. “I know, Tami. I know you’re trying too much, It’s just... difficult for me. I am not in love with her now but still...”

“I understand,” I said, my heart aching for him. “But we’re in this together. And I believe we can find happiness if we’re both willing to try.”

He reached out and took my hand, surprising me with the gesture. “You’re right. We are in this together. Let's go inside.”

We walked back into the house, hand in hand. The warmth from his touch lingered, giving me a glimmer of hope.

Inside, Ron Jiju asked someone to change the music and he pulled Mahi to the dance floor. All the other married couples soon joined, each pair seemingly lost in their own world. Mihir stood off to the side with Vihan and Roohi, gulping another drink, and I could see the longing in his eyes as he watched them.

I don't know why I could read people's minds or faces like my mom, but could not guess exactly what he was feeling. Sometimes I felt that he was jealous of Parshav and other times I felt that he was hurting to see Gaurvi and Shlok together.

I was about to approach him when the manager interrupted, asking if he should serve the food. I told him to wait until the song finished and to ask Ron Jiju after that. By then, Vihan had asked Roohi to dance, but she shook her head and instead asked Siddh. Vihan, looking shocked, turned to Sri, who accepted his offer. Now all of them were dancing except for Sagarika, Parshav, Mihir, and me.

Just then, Parshav came toward me, likely to ask for a dance. Under different circumstances, I might have agreed, but I could see Mihir was miserable. Before I could respond, Mihir suddenly appeared and pulled me to the dance floor without saying a word.

We started dancing, and it felt awkward at first. Ron Ji teased Mihir, "Dance properly if you want to, c'mon bro, you are holding her as if she is someone else’s wife. “Dance like you mean it! She is your wife, not a monster, who would eat you alive if you held her closer. ” They all urged.

Mihir pulled me closer, his arms wrapping around me more securely. Our bodies pressed together, and a shiver ran through me. I was feeling very shy, but at the same time, it felt good to be this close to him. Sparks seemed to fly wherever our bodies touched. My face turned red, and I couldn’t help but look up at him.

He was gazing down at me, and I could see that he was sad. But there was something else in his eyes too, something that made my heart flutter.

The song ended, and Ron Jiju asked for the music to stop for a while.

He announced a paper dance competition for couples. Raj and Myra, Ron and Mahi, Gaurvi and Shlok were all excited. Mihir and I stayed on the floor, not quite sure if we wanted to participate, but the enthusiasm of the others drew us in.

For the paper dance, a sheet of newspaper was placed on the floor for each couple. The rules were simple: when the music stopped, the couple had to fold the paper in half and continue dancing in the smaller space. If any part of the couple touched the floor outside the paper, they were out. The paper would keep getting smaller and smaller until only one couple was left.

The music started, and Mihir and I began to dance on our sheet of newspaper. I was nervous, but Mihir’s presence was reassuring. We moved together, trying to stay within the boundaries.

When the music stopped, we folded the paper in half. The space was smaller now, and we had to move closer. My heart raced as Mihir’s arms tightened around me. The warmth of his body against mine sent shivers down my spine.

The music started again, and we danced, our movements more restricted. Siddh and Sagrika were the first to be eliminated, laughing as they stepped off the paper. Next, Parshav and Sri were out, followed by Vihan and Roohi. Raj and Myra were eliminated after that, leaving only Ron and Mahi, Gaurvi and Shlok, and Mihir and me.

The paper was getting smaller and smaller. We had to hold each other tightly to stay on it. My face was flushed, and I could feel Mihir’s breath against my cheek. Every touch sent electric shocks through me.

When the music stopped again, we folded the paper once more. The space was so small now that we had to stand with our feet together. Mihir lifted me slightly off the ground, holding me close. I wrapped my arms around his neck, feeling a mix of shyness and excitement.

We continued to dance, our bodies pressed together. I could feel every beat of his heart, and my own heart was racing. I looked up at Mihir, and for a moment, our eyes locked. There was something in his gaze that made me feel hopeful, something that told me we could make this work.
