It was the day of the ball, and things were definitely hectic around the palace. Everyone was scrambling, and they made the last final adjustments before the ball officially began.
I was currently in my room, with a lot of maids helping me with my dress. It took the help of 4 maids to help me wear my gown because of its size and now everyone was scrambling to make sure it was perfect. Delilah helped with the tightening of my corset, and other maids started to get makeup ready. Pins were stuck in my dress to make sure it was great, and even though I had planned on wearing shoes, they wouldn't let me, so I had to spend the rest of the night in heels.
Once the dress was done, I smiled twirling around. Even though I didn't like wearing gowns or dresses, this one was absolutely perfect. And Delilah was definitely right. The bow did make a difference. But either way, without her I wouldn't be wearing this, so I thanked her a lot today.
The maids started to do my makeup, while I was standing so that they wouldn't wrinkle the dress, and as usual, I asked them to do a light makeup.
They curled my hair, and stuck a lot of bobby pins in it to make sure it stayed in that hairstyle. And they used hair spray. A lot of hairspray.
And after all of this, I didn't even realize that it was only minutes before I had to be in the ballroom. They added the silver tiara on the top of my head, and once they were done, I looked amazing. Like an actual princess.
I smiled, hugging every single one of them, before heading out of my room. Now I had to go through the obstacles of stairs. I hung onto the railing like my life depended on it, and it probably did, and I went down step by step, like a little kid who can't go downstairs without the help of their mother.
As I celebrated my last step, it was only normal that I had to trip over my leg. I shrieked and closed my eyes preparing for the pain of the hard floor, only to find myself in a pair of arms.
I slowly blinked and looked up at my savior, only for him to be Fitz.
I stood up, clearing my throat, and straightening my dress.
"Thank you. But how did you catch me in time?" I asked, and he grabbed my hand, bringing the back of it to his lips, where he placed a small kiss on my knuckles.
"I was heading to the ballroom myself and found you so focused on heading down the stairs, so I waited for a while and waited by the railing in case you'd trip or anything. And good thing I was right or else you'd be spending your time in the hospital." He smiled, twirling me around. "And I don't know if anyone's told you, but red is definitely your color. You look so breathtaking and gorgeous, it's hard to take my eyes off you." He kissed me, which was definitely a risky move to do in the halls, but it was in the heat of the moment.
Once we broke apart, I smiled when I saw my lipstick on his lips too.
"You might want to wipe your lips, you took a little bit of my lipstick." His cheeks turned a bit red at that.
"Wait for me here, I won't take long." And he didn't. In only a couple minutes he came back, looking better than he did in the beginning. And he was wearing my favorite cologne of his.
"You're wearing my favorite cologne of yours." Fitz chuckled, raising his arm enough to link mine through his. And with that we started to walk.
"Really? I didn't know you had a favorite cologne." Fitz answered.
"Well I do." I even thought about stealing it a few times but never had the courage to do so.
"I guess I should wear it more often then," I smiled softly, before we soon made it to the open doors of the ballroom. Edaline soon saw us, giving us one of her sappy motherly smiles, making her way over to us, wearing her own blue and white gown.
"You two make a cute couple. Let me take a picture of you two before anyone else comes in," I knew not to protest, because she wouldn't care either way. Fitz and I laced our fingers together while our hands were still linked, smiling for the camera. After she took many photos, she put the phone down and started to look at the photos. "Aww you guys are so cute."
A blush came to both our faces.
"Thank you mom." She smiled. We noticed more selected entering the room, so we broke apart. Soon everyone was present, and more nobles started to enter the room, and it was definitely loud inside.
The amount of people that I've spoken to was far too many to count, and my jaw hurts from talking so much.
When music came on, I asked random selected to dance with me, only to increase the pain in my feet by every dance.
The night was almost over, and the only last dance that remained was the Last Dance. And I was saving that dance for someone special.
I felt bad I hadn't danced with Fitz for the whole night, but only because I was planning on having him dance with me for the Last Dance. As someone announced on the microphone, everyone cleared the dance floor for us. And I felt like eyes were only on me when I went to ask Fitz to join me for the dance.
"I thought you were going to forget about me princess." Fitz said, a small smile growing on his face.
"How could I? Would you please share this dance with me?" He held my hand, nodding his head.
"I would love to." We headed to the empty dance floor, where my parents soon came up a few feet beside us, and we took our starting position. The music started, and when it did, everything seemed to go by amazingly. Fitz and I moved to the music well, and I was very confident that I wasn't going to step on his feet.
"Long night huh?" Fitz whispered.
"Yeah, definitely. And I'm sorry we didn't share a dance before this one. I wanted this to be special." Fitz smiled.
"I know princess. But I do have to say, if you didn't pick me, I definitely would've been upset." I laughed softly.
"If I didn't, that means there is definitely something wrong with me."
"You know I heard the person you share the Last Dance with always ends up winning the selection." Fitz said.
"Really? And where did you hear that from?" I asked him.
"My mom actually. When my sister and I were younger she'd always tell us stories about her and my dad, and their past with selections. And she always said that the person who shares the Last Dance with the prince or princess, always wins."
"That's sweet, and I don't think it's going to stop with my selection." Fitz's cheeks turned red at that, and with that the music ended, with Fitz dipping me, and Grady dipping Edaline.
Once we stood up again, we were terrified by the next sound we heard.
Gunshots.
