Grady's POV

(Time Skip back)

I started pacing back and forth in my study, staring at the ground while I thought about this whole situation.

"Grady, weren't you a tad bit harsh with her? I mean she's in love. You can't blame her." I stopped in my tracks, shaking my head.

"I don't care if she's in love. She could've been in love with anyone else. But instead she chose the person who she wasn't supposed to meet in the first place, and sneaked him inside her selection? That's too much." Edaline shook her head.

"I just feel so bad for her. When I was looking at them saying goodbye, the way they both looked at each other, it didn't feel right. They truly are in love."

"They're just teenagers, they don't know about love." Edaline raised an eyebrow.

"Really? So you're saying the love we shared when we were teenagers didn't mean anything? Don't you remember how upset we were when my parents wouldn't let us date? We're doing the same thing to her." I sighed.

"The love we shared when we were teenagers definitely was real, but we're not letting her date him because she can't. It's illegal, and to bypass that law we need to talk with the royal councilors, the king and queen of Everglen, and the house of laws. I'm sorry, but no. She brought this upon herself." I say, continuing to pace.

"Fine then, I'm going to go check on her." Edaline said, standing up to leave the study. What a mess.

Edaline's POV

I knocked on her door, not hearing anything from inside.

"Sophie, could you please open the door? I want to talk please." No answer. I sighed, grabbing a Bobby pin from my hair, using it to unlock her door. As I entered, I found her bed messy, a lot of pillows, and tissues scattered around the room.

I took a seat on the edge of her bed, giving her some space.

"Leave." She simply said.

"Darling, please talk. It's not healthy for you to live like this."

"I don't care what's healthy or not." She replied.

"But I do. And to keep sulking here by yourself won't do anything. You need someone to talk to."

"I'm not going to talk to you."

"Sweetheart, please. Talk to me. I know I'm not someone you want to see right now, but I won't leave if you don't." She sighed, sitting up.

"What."

"See that's better." My eyes went to her clothes, "whose sweater is that?"

"Fitz's." She answered.

"About that. I'm really sorry about everything. I know that you two loved each other, but law is law. And what you did is illegal. But either way, I'm sorry about the heartbreak you're feeling right now."

"Sorry won't do it. I need to see him." I pursed my lips together.

"I know darling. I wish you could, but I don't have any power in this situation. But no matter what your father says, you will see him. I promise. But definitely not right now. But you two did make a lovely couple."

"I just miss him so much. I never realized how much I really cared and loved him until I wasn't able to see or talk to him. He wasn't only the love of my life, he was my best friend." She stopped to look over at her nightstand, grabbing the picture of her and Fitz kissing, "Someone I could talk to all the time about anything or everything. I trusted him with my life, and he trusted me with his." She quickly wiped the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
