chapter twenty five

Minji wasn’t in class today, and it wasn’t hard to guess why. She and Ni-ki had landed themselves in detention—again. This time, their constant bickering had escalated to the point where they accidentally involved a teacher in one of their arguments.

It was classic Minji and Ni-ki, always arguing anywhere and everywhere, and now they were paying the price for it. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought, though I did feel a bit sorry for Minji.

Detention with Ni-ki was probably the last place she wanted to be right now.

With Minji absent, it was just Rei and me in our usual spots at the back of the classroom.

As I settled in, trying to focus on the lesson, I couldn’t ignore the familiar whispers coming from the front. Hera and Soodam, the infamous "Wonder Twins," were at it again.

Their latest target? Rei’s laptop, which was covered in a collection of cute stickers.

"Honestly, why does she bother with all those childish stickers? It’s like she’s trying too hard to be cute," Hera sneered, not even bothering to lower her voice.

Soodam, ever the echo, nodded in agreement. "Maybe she thinks it’ll distract people from how boring she actually is."

My irritation flared, but before I could react, a voice from the front row cut through the room.

"You know," Jungwon said, his tone calm yet loud enough for everyone to hear, "some girls just love to act like they’re the main character, but really, they’re just pathetic background noise."

The room went silent, and then, as the weight of his words settled in, laughter erupted from all corners. Hera and Soodam’s smug expressions faltered, their faces turning red as they realized they had just been publicly put in their place.

Rei leaned over to me, a small smile playing on her lips.

"I’ve always liked Jungwon," she whispered. "Other than Chenle and Dongpyo, he’s the only one who really deserves that Student Council President position. He doesn’t let bullies get away with anything."

I nodded, my heart warming with gratitude. I glanced at Jungwon, and our eyes met.

For a brief moment, we shared a silent understanding, his gaze saying what words didn’t need to: I’ve got your back.

The gesture was simple, but it meant more than I could express.

As I turned back to Rei, still feeling a bit flustered by Jungwon’s unexpected support, I noticed Sunoo, who was sitting beside him, leaning in to whisper something.

Jungwon’s expression immediately changed—he shot Sunoo a glare that was both sharp and exasperated. I couldn’t hear what Sunoo was teasing him about, but whatever it was, it clearly struck a nerve.

I wondered what could’ve made Jungwon react like that, especially considering how calm and collected he usually was.

But as I sat there, trying to piece together what was happening, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Jungwon than met the eye.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized how much of a mystery Jungwon still was to me.

It reminded me of SD—both kept me guessing, drawing me in with their unpredictability.

With each moment I spent with Jungwon, the parallels between him and SD grew harder to ignore, leaving me tangled in the mystery of them both.
